      Was it power? I thought Gendo was trying to bring his wife back to life and didnt care about anything else.

        True, but it’s muddled - if I recall correctly, he takes a lot of weird risks that a loving spouse wouldn’t, while saying the expected things.

      That’s… not at all what it’s about. Humanity competes with not just it’s self, but with all of the other possibilities which exist in this universe. As we grow and expand our powers we repeatedly come into conflict with proportionally greater adversity. The Eva program is an attempt to create a technological “ark” which can shelter the human soul indefinitely even after the world moves on without us. Gendo, as the human put in charge of managing this project, is grief stricken when his wife is killed by their research, and subverts the original intention in an attempt to use the technologies that he is developing to allow him to see her one more time.
