I am not sure about this. On one hand it would be cool not to run to the mailbox anymore, on the other hand I don’t trust our cantons to implement an absolutely safe technical solution. Almost no week goes by without an IT scandal involving the authorities. We have little to gain but a lot to lose with e-voting. And our Schwurblers will immediately doubt every result, because they take over every nonsense from the US anyway.
E-Voting will eventually come but it’s going to be a colossal mistake. The problem is that it is scalable and so is the attack surface. You can already falsify votes but since you’d have to falsify thousands of votes all across the country at the same time, you can’t scale the attack. Well you could but you need like an organized army organization to do it, which is not feasible undetected.
Compare that to compromising a digital voting machine and being able to enter the system. You can falsify millions of votes within seconds from a single point. The point is not making the system secure so it can’t be attacked (no system is uncrackable) but to reign in the fallout. What’s the consequence of a voting Bureau in Aargau being compromised? Almost nothing. What is the consequence of an Aargau voting server being compromised? The whole system.
