Jellyfin and the *arr stack are amazing and much simpler to set-up than I anticipated (if you already know your way around self hosting, docker compose and the like).

I recommend avoiding this overcomplication unless you have a specific need to address it.

Free streaming sites are for laymen and require no technical knowledge to operate.

Yeah, as I said it’s relatively easy if you’re already into this kind of nerd stuff, otherwise it’d require a lot of time and effort. And I don’t know of any free streaming site with french-dubbed media, which my kids require.

Your kids will learn other languages reeeeeaaaally quickly if you show them their favourite shows in those languages.

I’ve been a Netflix user since like 2004. I’m also well aware of that community and reference it often. I recently setup Stremio and my next step will be setting up *arr.

I’m perfectly fine paying for content as long as the trade offs are worth it. Netflix limits PC streaming to 720p unless you use their app which is bullshit. I’ll likely be canceling Hulu/Disney soon too. That one is for several reasons: not a fan of monopolistic tactics, Disney Plus’ interface is garbage, and Disney Plus is rolling out ads. I already canceled Amazon Prime because of ads.

I’d be fascinated to know whether Prime membership has taken a noticeable hit. I have been a member since its inception, and buy $20K/year in stuff there, but canceled my upcoming renewal, when they announced the price gouge for PrimeVideo and then started salting programming with ads.
