I ran out of frozen rats for the first time! When I got Revy in March I ordered like 40 rats for her. I also got a 5-pack of small frozen mice for scenting from the local pet store to ease the switch (her breeder fed freshly killed mice).

Now that she’s made a very good switch to the f/t rats and we got a solid feeding routine, I’m excited to introduce some variety into her diet! She’s still young enough that positive experiences with different food items will greatly pay off in the long run :)

So this time I ordered 20 rats, 10 ASFs, 10 Dwarf Hamsters (although they look more like young Syrian Hamsters?) and 10 Large Mice. I would have ordered Day-old chicks too, but apparently you can’t buy those online atm because of some sort of hygiene regulation thing. The local pet store does have them though, so I wonder what exactly the issue with online is?

Anyways, the idea is to offer a rat every second feeding to still have it as a baseline, but throw in some variety in the other feedings.

Yesterday I offered one of the ASFs and Revy got very excited just from the smell and took it with no hesitation. Which I guess is to be expected since Royal Pythons are known to really like ASFs, but I didn’t expect this strong of a response because she has never seen or smelled an ASF in her life (as far as I know).

I have never seen an ASF before ordering these either - and they are so damn cute ?!? Those high-white patterns with the colored saddles and the splotches are absolutely gorgeous!! And their faces are exactly in the middle between mouse and rat, there’s something really cool about that.

I wish I had known these existed back when I had rodents as pets! I only had Hamsters and Fancy Mice when I was a kid. ASFs might have been a cool option too back then :D
