Clicking on the first two trending communities revealed a single post and a few comments. What makes it being listed as “trending”? or does it also just show new communities?

as already said by @[email protected], the naming is incorrect. Its rather “New Communities” than trending.
New communities rather than trending.

trending communities are going away in the next release iirc due to the current implementation not really being useful.
