The list, according to the article:
- Age of Empires: Mobile
- Age of Empires: The Age of Kings (Nintendo DS)
- Age of Empires III: Definitive Edition
- Age of Empires: Definitive Edition
- Age of Empires IV
- Age of Mythology: Retold
- Age of Empires II: Definitive Edition
Not quite the same series, but also Microsoft. Rise of Nations. Would be nice to see that one have a remake.
Anyway, Age of Empires 1. (Original edition) will always be my favorite, even though it’s not what people now should be playing.
That is definitely 2 Definitive. (With the Rome expansion bringing 1 DE into that game 😄)
I never played Rise of Nations or Empire Earth back in the day. But I’ve seen enough about them that I would love for either (or both!) of them to receive a good definitive edition.
It’s been a long time since I’ve played Empire Earth, but 0 A.D. satiates some of my EE nostalgia.
I guess, I should say that it started out as an AoE2 mod, and I never played an AoE game, so it could be a carbon-copy of AoE and my nostalgia wouldn’t know it. 🫠
I haven’t played it in a long time, but I did play a little 0 AD maybe a decade ago. I don’t remember it super well, but from what I do remember it had some relatively significant differences from Age.
Ah, of course you’re familiar. 🙃
Nah it was a good game for you to bring up I feel. It’s definitely the most closely-related game to Age that isn’t Age. Heck, it belongs in this list more than Age of Empires: Mobile does.
And I’m not that familiar anyway. As I said, the last time I played was about a decade ago. And even that was probably not even 10 hours of play.
Empire Earth was also nice indeed. But for current repeatability RoN definitely holds up much better. I think that one is still fun.
Mobile is undoubtedly the worst. It’s unbearable. Hardly even a game.
I’ve never played the DS game. I might put Age of Empires Online in this spot instead.
It’s unfortunate, to me, that 3 ended up this low. It’s not my favourite, by a long shot, but it’s functional and fun. Which is more than can be said for the DE version of 1. I love the bones of 1, but the DE was terrible. So terrible that they tried releasing it again in the Return to Rome DLC for 2.
Which leaves us with the 3 good games. Being the mod of this community, nobody should be surprised that my favourite is Myth. 4 is actually my second favourite, and 2 is only in 3rd place. But Myth still has too many bugs and missing polish features. Even though it’s my #1 favourite, if I was asked to list which I think is the best, I’d put it in 3rd.
