Just as the title says. It’s here (I used the SFW instance for it, just in case).
I’ll list the tools here. Recommendations are in bold from the creators of this thing. Italics are my recommendations if any are missing. Bold italics are for community recommendations that fit a particular category. Some apps are proprietary, but there are a few like that here.
Note: This is a living post, and unless something happens, I’ll keep this one updated with as much information as the community recommends if I missed anything.

Hope this helps.
“How’s the writing going?”
“Haven’t written anything yet.”
“What? But you’ve been sitting there for HOURS.”
“I was setting up my writing space.”
One thing I’d add is LanguageTool.
It’s not a writer, but a self hostable spelling/grammar/style checker that’s far superior to default spellcheck.
A few interfaces support it directly, but you can also run it as a browser extension to get it within many of these tools.
LanguageTool isn’t as private as Harper is. Harper is local-only, whereas LanguageTool can be self-hosted, but takes more resources than Harper.
Interesting! I’ve never heard of Harper.
Looks like it’s faster than LT, albeit with fewer bells and whistles and somewhat less comprehensive checking. And LT doesn’t need a ton of RAM, really.
There are use cases for both, I think. I’d prefer LT’s more comprehensive checking for creative writing, and Harper for quicker notes (or older machines).
Oh, and I forgot to mention another option: Zettlr.
Oh I totally missed this competition. I would’ve participated if it started now, but November was a bad month for me to do it anyway.
I had mine already done by the end of the month (Sunday, in fact) after some breaksbin the writing due to heart concerns that got fixed.
Wow - lots and lots here. I think I’ve seen most of these before, but there are some that I haven’t. Worth taking a look through the whole list… Although a quick glance at a few are a bit, suspicious to me,
A few that could be added:
- Notion
- Joplin
- StandardNotes
- LyX
- Emacs
- Vim / Neovim
and of course the standards:
- Microsoft Word
- LibreOffice
- Collabora
I mostly found self-hosted and/or local-first tools, which was why I made this list long. Once I have internet back (I don’t right now due to ISP stupidity), then I can add some.
Also, Notion I can’t recommend, as GHOST has some articles on his blog about it and Cloud-first solutions being non-neutral entities here:
- https://untraceabledigitaldissident.com/would-you-violate-a-client-nda-without-knowing-it/
- https://untraceabledigitaldissident.com/who-owns-your-creative-workflow/
Word I can’t recommend either, unless it’s an older verision of Word before it became cloud-first. If you can make it local-first, then that’s one thing. Otherwise, stick to CryptPad or LibreOffice. Collabora I hadn’t heard of.
True - I didn’t think of local first when I wrote that comment. StandardNotes is also cloud-first. But everything else I mentioned is local first, and locally installed / hosted.
Standard Notes is local-first, as it’s usable offline. Cloud saving is disabled if it’s offline.
Okay - they must have changed that since 2015 or 2016 which was when I last used it… ;)
