DO NOT give ultimate guitar a cent of your money. They are a greedy, scum-sucking, predatory company.

I paid for the full version many many years ago. I think it was a whopping $1 or something and I got grandfathered in somehow because I’ve always had full access to everything even though I never bought a subscription.

I got that same deal, but somewhere along the way they started charging me a monthly fee.

It was a huge pain to cancel, because it wasn’t showing anywhere that I’d actually subscribed, so I couldn’t just unsubscribe from the app or website.

Same here! Many years ago I paid for a lifetime subscription and I really don’t regret it (but only because it was an one-time payment for life).

I’m in the same boat, but even with that I’m still finding myself avoiding them in favor of songsterr due to the ludicrous number of ads for features I never wanted or asked for in the app. Shockingly, they all cost more money! Who’dve thought

        Same thing.

To be honest, I don’t even remember paying anything but for some reason everything is accessible.

Use the app, pop ups, auto playing videos/ads, the internet has become incredibly shitty. I went to BBC News (historically a bastion of good web practices) and they now even have a big popup to get you to sign up.

Also easier to get tracking info through installed apps. Ultimately, yes, money.

That would surprise me. Most platforms throw permission dialogs whenever an app gets too nosy. If it was a free app, I could see it being forced because it would be harder to block ads.

When a company pushes you towards their official app, it’s almost exclusively so that they can mine more of your data without your explicit consent

Sounds to me like there needs to be an open-source guitar tabs database if there isn’t one already

It’s gotten worse recently - previously I could dismiss that and still see the whole tab. Now after seeing visiting a few tab pages, it prevents me from seeing any on mobile. Switching to private browsing works, but gosh it is annoying!

UG has gotten terrible in their funding funnel. It’s pretty much just a straight drop into a wallet squeeze at this point.

I personally use Songsterr for tablature. It’s a little lacking in the chord chart department but I do really like their tab tools.

It has a monthly sub on desktop but on mobile I bought it once and have kept it forever so your mileage may vary.

Damn, looks like I got grandfathered then. $10/m isn’t terrible I guess, but it’s up to the individual.

What’s all the hate for UG about? I’ve been using it for years, as a casual guitar player, to get tabs of songs I want to learn. Happy to pay $15 year for the service. I know they annoy you constantly to get premium if you are a free user but for the price, I don’t know of a better service for tabs.

It’s not about UG specifically. It’s about websites forcing you to install their app instead of just being in the browser. Like how many apps do I have to install for every little thing? One just to order pizza, one to look up lyrics, Twitter app just to see one post, reddit app because you can’t comment from browser ofc. Like my phone is a dumpster fire already.

I hear you. I just ordered pizza from a local pizzeria we like via their app. It’s one random hole in the wall pizzeria and I need their app to order a pie. In that regard, I completely agree. It’s out of control.

I got lifetime premium by buying the app for $1 when it first came out and they still annoy the shit out of me almost every time I open the app

I wish. I was late to the party on that one. But in general, I pay way more than I should for a lifetime one time payment just to avoid a subscription. Can’t stand it.

You can try to ask in [email protected] for alternatives, if they’re usually paid. I found alternatives for sites providing piano sheets by asking anyway :)

I use Guitar Chords and Tabs ( the App Name ). The website is (Chords and Tabs)[https://www.chords-and-tabs.net/]. It’s got a decent catalog and for any song you can’t find or is incorrect, just go find one on Ultimate Guitar, copy, then paste into your own version under their “My Songs” section.

I’ve been pretty pleased with it overall. Pro version is around $2.

Thanks! Seems to have a lot more songs than Songsterr, along with a much less over-designed website.

Will have to do until someone creates a de-federated alternative. :)

No, it revolves around showing you more ads.

Someone had to go to the effort to detect a mobile browser and force them into the app.

Detecting a mobile browser is easier than making every feature on your site mobile responsive, and confirming its a good mobile experience. Every add they show in the app could be shown in the browser, though I guess they would get access to notifications if that’s the case.
