  • So this meme would only make sense in Old High German.

Maybe I put it wrong, but it works even better in modern Germany: “Stuhl” means chair in modern German. The joke/pun is well-known in German: “Darf ich Ihnen den Stuhl zurückschieben?” So unlike in the English version, “Stuhl” literally both means “chair” and “poop”.

  • Great to see a fellow frog in the wild!

I am guessing this comes directly from German

The German and English wikipedia have interesting information about the etymology of the English chair and the German Stuhl:

    Chair:

Chair comes from the early 13th-century English word chaere, from Old French chaiere (“chair, seat, throne”), from Latin cathedra (“seat”).

    Stuhl:

    […] althochdeutsch stuol ‚Sitz, Thron‘ […]

(Old high German stuol meaning ‘seat’ or ‘throne’

Das Wort Stuhl […] ist mit l-Suffix zur indoeuropäischen Wurzel *stā-, *stǝ- ‚stehen, stellen‘ gebildet.

(The word Stuhl is built from the proto-indo-european language by adding the suffix ‘l’ to the root ‘*stā’ or ‘*stǝ’ which means ‘to stand’)

So both means seat/seating or throne but chair is more a throne-like furniture (by having arm rests and/or back rest) whereas Stuhl was more like a simple stool (a small foot rest or seating without any back rest or arm rests). In German we use “Schemel” or “Hocker” to describe such a stool. “Schemel” seems to come from “scamilla”, Latin for small bench.

I have no idea how all this information helps us, but it’s interesting :D

  • It could be roughly translated to “Steiner’s attack was an order”. Felix Steiner was the leader of “Kampfgruppe Steiner”. They were formed during the end of WWII to help defending Berlin against allied forces. But Steiner realised that his military equipment and personnel was not sufficient to start any counterattack against the advancing allied forces.

In the movie “Der Untergang” Adolf Hitler is shown receiving the message regarding Steiner’s refusal to start the counterattack. Basically Hitler is reacting to this message like “I told Steiner to start the counterattack. But he refused to obey. It was an order but he didn’t do anything to help us.”

  • LeFrog@discuss.tchncs.detoADHD@lemmy.worldCan you relate?

  • The syntax is this: [some text](https://my-cool-url.com/nice) which is then rendered like this: some text

The complete “markdown source code” of my comment is this:

    - Phone app, which is [com.Android.dialer](https://android.googlesource.com/platform/packages/apps/Dialer/) that seems kind of (F)OSS at least(?)
    - Contacts app, same as phone app: [com.android.contacts](
    https://android.googlesource.com/platform/packages/apps/Contacts)
    - Telegram client [Forkgram](https://github.com/forkgram/TelegramAndroid) which is partly OSS but contains unfree stuff upstream + relies completely on non-free service (telegram server +client)
    - Email: [K9/thunderbird android](https://github.com/thunderbird/thunderbird-android) full FOSS
    - Browser: [Iceraven](https://github.com/fork-maintainers/iceraven-browser) which is a fork of Firefox Android. It comes with the MPL (Mozilla public license) but I think it also contains non-free binaries or assets, so mostly FOSS I would say?
