  • Hiring manager here, private security industry.

I can honestly say, as M/33/straight, I’ve never been attracted to a coworker OR applicant. It’s just not how my brain is wired, I guess.

I have, however, given certain people further consideration based on looks. I look for intimidating. I’m a rocker type guy with long hair, beard, I try and have as much leather and metal draped over me as possible. It creates a certain sense of unease dealing with people; when you can articulate without saying a word, “I don’t exactly play by the rules,” you get an upper hand in some situations.

We had this one guy, he was close to 7’ tall, fat, big gauges in his ears and covered in tattoos. He also sang in a local metal band. THAT is my kinda guy. A hiring nightmare anywhere else, but he had what I look for; in a tense situation, are you gonna be able to give yourself an upper hand?

It certainly makes for an eclectic crew. I have two ex gangbangers. The other management were mortified that I hired them, but they’re two of my best employees.

Meh, I’m rambling, but yeah, you get the point. Pretty hasn’t ever been a consideration for me, at least not yet.

  • This.

I’ve been saying over and over (down in that R-named shithole that banned me for a short comment approving of revolution,) some folks are gonna have to take a big L to kick it off here.

The first 50 or so Luigi’s will be dealt with harshly as examples; the public will buy the reasons fed to them and think of them as fucking monsters.

50 or so and people will start to take notice and see what needs to be accomplished here. Why do so many people hate CEOs? Hell, today, why would some “crazy person” want to hurt Charlie Kirk???

One more of that 50 got his metaphorical wings today.

    Hmmm.

They’ll think, and think, and think. Eventually, watching this play out while food becomes out of their price range, their job replaces them with a TV screen of a Filipino lady, a small house hits an average of $500k in price, etc.

    Something’s wrong.

Nepal got it, man. Enough people put their thinkin’ caps on and figured it out.

I went to Kent State from 2014-2017. Even met Dean Kahler at a memorial event; he was hit in the spine by a National Guard bullet and paralyzed, confined to a wheelchair for life.

America isn’t a bright place, intellectually. It’s gonna take cold, raw, painful time for enough people to figure out what is going on and the one way it can be solved.

That block of time, which we’re in right now, is gonna Fucking. Suck.

  • USA here. Eeeyup.

We’re more incarcerative (word?) than basically anywhere else in the world; certainly more than any western country by a longs….eh, bad timing for that phrase.

It doesn’t help us. In fact, it might be a factor making us the most violent place in the western world. (We’d have to be put side by side with South Africa to check numbers.)

Our prisons get people tortured and killed; the ones who survive come out as better criminals, often with zero “life” left; spouse is probably gone with the kids, house foreclosed, job long gone and prospects of getting one with a record severely damaged.

What is there left to do? Shit that’s illegal. Gotta survive somehow, it’s your only way left to stick it to a system that has strongly indicated it would prefer if you were dead.

  • You’re not wrong; this is a tough one to comment sensibly on.

The crowd thing, it’s Utah; I would anticipate a crowd at an Utah university for something like this being full of homeschooled kids who haven’t broken away from parroting their parents’ views yet. Kirk is probably a hero in many of those households.

I was thinking the same thing about the angle. The tent would’ve theoretically meant the shooter would’ve had to be at a similar level/grade to make that shot.

I was only able to find censored versions of the video, but it sounds like he was hit in the neck. It will be a genuine miracle if he survives.

You know what’s sort of depressingly funny? The country would be better off if he were jailed for speech inciting violence. Not this.

  • I can work on/repair basically anything old. Things from a certain period and back just make sense, plain and simple.

I can shave with a straight razor, operate an oil lamp (and I have several throughout my house,) hell, I’m a musician, and I recorded on tape until 2014, using clunky, old multitrack tape machines, which I can also repair and maintain. (I still dream of getting ahold of an 8-track reel machine, a Tascam 80-8 or especially a 388. They are stupid expensive if you can find a working one at all.)

  • I got ahold of a big box of Canadian candy recently, gave some to my (very Republican) mom. She was amazed how much better it is, and how much shorter the ingredient list is. The chocolate itself isn’t like candle wax. (She had also never had a Coffee Crisp before, poor thing.)

Yeah; they don’t let companies use car antifreeze as a preservative! (Fireball whiskey is banned pretty much everywhere except the USA for this reason. The preservative is literally antifreeze.)

Swear to fuck, we could dramatically improve national health in a few months if we’d shut our mouths and open our eyes. Oh, and every single thing on our store shelves? Replace it with the Euro version; they have all the same stuff we do, it’s just vastly better made.

  • I’m a pro musician. I was in a big rock band in the mid 2010s, and we were doing all kinds of cool shit. It imploded over stuff that didn’t really involve me, but following that, I went into a serious drunk-depression that lasted years and almost killed me.

I cleaned up, going on two years sober, have a new band together, and are about to open ourselves up to the world and start booking shows. It’ll be my first shows completely sober since like 2012. It’s terrifying, but I’m excited as hell.

Punk rock music has fallen by the wayside. Time to try and bring it back to life. 🤘

  • I feel that. I actually was just lamenting that a minute ago, looking at the bottom of my Zippo lighter, which says “1941 Replica.”

“Man, imagine living in a time when nobody thought smoking was bad for you…” - my brain

Imagine living in 1902, when you could just go to the store and buy cocaine and heroin for your toothache.

Hell, listening to the fun our parents had growing up. It shouldn’t be punishable by years in prison to shoot off some fireworks at a party. (I live in OH, our fireworks laws are brutal. Us and Utah, man.)

I don’t think there’s anything wrong with lamenting that the past is gone. Yes, there were bad things we’re better off without, but we lost and gave up a lot, too. Missing those things isn’t wrong.
