You must not be an American…
Since I invariably wind up getting “name suits” types of comments, here’s the explanation behind it:
Around the turn of the millennium, I was trying to come up with a username to use on a particular site that had a shortish character count limit for usernames. My goal was something related to the fact that I would often be making my points in arguments with “holier-than-thou” types by taking what they were saying, and turning it on its head so the offensive stuff was directed back at them.
I also happened to learn shortly beforehand that many years ago “'ape” was somewhat commonly used as a verb to mean “imitate” or “copy.”
I’m sure you can figure the rest out.

I’m MUCH more motivated by helping solve problems for others than for myself. My existence in a world run by self-centered control freak assholes too short-sighted to see the value in other approaches to life has made for an incredibly miserable waste of potential and purpose out of my so-called “life.”
I hadn’t, but I did forget about most of these. I wonder how much they influenced my preference for just a plain black background vs perhaps just being used to the readability it provided old green and amber TTY terminals.

4·27 days agoI’ll be straightforward and just say I don’t understand some of that stuff yet, and it’s honestly not much of a priority to me to do so. Just as long as I can have a far less shitty Reddit-like experience, I’m happy. Just getting too old to keep up with the constant change anymore, I guess (along with being slightly handicapped by mental issues like ADD).
Regardless, thanks for the explanation - I’ve bookmarked it for later reference should something prompt me to want to understand it better. Hopefully others here will get use out of it, too.

8·27 days agoMany years back - not long after it first came out, I think - Ars Technica did a series of reviews on it, and the reviewer had similar experiences. It was quite in depth as I recall.

3·27 days agoConsidering the large disparity in counts between your posts and comments, and this rather ancient post, along with the fact this is not the first time I’ve seen such behavior from your account… I feel it’s pretty reasonable to guess that you have some sort of bot that may be a work in progress you’re testing considering the low post frequency rate. If I’m wrong, I’d be interested in why you’re pulling old posts off Reddit for posting here. I don’t really care much either way, but I’m sure you can understand why it might be considered odd behavior.

70·27 days agoOf course the cops keep using it - payments from the inevitable lawsuits don’t come out of their pockets, so why give a shit when there are quotas to make? No accountability breeds irresponsibility.

3·27 days agoI use a Firefox variant and various extensions like Bypass Paywalls Clean (which is NOT available on Mozilla’s repository), and never see that crap. I don’t care what the extensions are doing behind the scenes to get rid of the crap because the law is a joke anymore (as proven by the current White House occupant) - if they want to go after you, then they’re gonna find a way to get you no matter what. They want lawlessness for themselves? Then I’m gonna play their game, too.

4·27 days agoThank you for the response! I’m glad I didn’t trip over myself in my rush to express what I was feeling while it was fresh in my head.
I’m gonna wait a day or two to make sure nobody else has any suggestions before I submit. I’ll post my final version if it changes in any significant way, & confirm submission when I do.
I’m strongly leaning toward including my actual name as an indication of how seriously I take this, but I’m not sure it’s worth the risk - both of tying it to my screenname (which goes back at least a quarter century for me on various sites), and the risk of inviting IRL retribution. I know it’s unlikely to make any real difference in what the assholes running things currently are likely to do, but I’d also rather not give them an easy excuse to be dismissive of my input. Any thoughts on that?

6·27 days agoUgh! Didn’t know. Yeah, that’s a move I could get behind in light of that. Unfortunately, according to the Deadline article he’s already committed to “lending his voice” even though he wasn’t physically there for the announcement.
Maybe we’ll get lucky and his fellow cast members will help him get back to reality a bit - especially considering it’s slowly becoming harder to be anything but the most diehard of a Trump supporter.

I can’t help but find this sentence amusing. If born deaf, aren’t they hearing for the first time? I know the explanations for this, but it’s still sloppy writing, IMHO.
