  • Yes agreed, all of the PFAS just keeps adding up and we know it’s causing all sorts of issue. I hope we can get that legislation in the near future where manufacturers are required to clearly indicate what products have PFAS in their end-product or in the process of making it. Because PFAS is in so many things and most people don’t even realize it. They might know about the non-stick pans, but it is in many more products, some surprised me to learn it was in it. If it’s clearly labeled, hopefully people will chose the product without the PFAS instead of the one with.

  • YSK the finished PFAS in the end product like non stick pans is perfectly safe. The long molecules with strong carbon-fluoride bonds don’t interact with biology at all. You can cut it up into tiny pieces and eat it, it will just come out the other end. Even if you were to implant it inside your body, it would do nothing. Actually materials like PTFE are often used for medical implants, specially because they are so inert and safe.

So why is PFAS bad? Because in the production of the long molecules, short molecules are required. Those molecules are a waste product after use and are usually dumped. In the past they were dumped in huge amounts. However these short molecules are very dangerous, they do interact with biology and cause all sorts of issues including cancer. The people at Dupont figured this out very quickly, but chose not to report on it. It took a long time for the issue to become public. With their waste material giving the company a bad name, they said they invented a new short molecule to use, which was much safer. Except it wasn’t safer at all, they knew it wasn’t and they again didn’t make that info public. After they were found out a second time, the governments classified all such chemicals under the PFAS family and regulated all of them.

Unfortunately our world runs on stuff like PTFE, so it’s still widely used, without any substitutes available. And we keep on dumping those dangerous short molecules into our environment. And because they don’t decay over time (hence the nickname forever chemicals) they are here to stay. We’ve also found out even a little bit of it can be dangerous and we’ve dumped a lot of it into our water supply. So that’s why PFAS is bad.

TLDR: If you own anything with PTFE or similar materials like non stick pans and cutting boards, don’t worry they are totally safe. Since the damage is already done, keep using them as much as possible, so the damage wasn’t for nothing. If you are going to buy new stuff: avoid any products with PFAS as a waste product. Governments are working on regulation to make this clearly visible when purchasing a product. The less we buy, the less we produce, the less we pollute.

  • This is super dumb, it’s the same logic all those movie studios used to have the government crack down on piracy (destroying our rights in the process). Just because someone uses an alternative, does not mean that company has lost anything. It doesn’t mean it was a sale and that sale was removed by the alternative. If the alternative wasn’t available, the sale might have been there, but it might also have not, there is no way of knowing (and my instinct is most of the time there would not have been a sale).

For example with movies, just because someone pirates the movie, doesn’t mean they would have gone to see the movie in theaters. They could have for example not bothered watching the movie (most likely), since they deemed it not worthy. They might have waited to watch it till it aired on TV or for cheap on a streaming service. Or might have watched it with friends on a streaming service for example.

And with software, just because someone uses GIMP doesn’t mean they would have bought Adobe tools instead. For example they might have simply not done the thing, if it costs money they wouldn’t have bothered. Or they might have used one of the dozens (if not hundreds) of alternative tools. They might have paid someone else to do it, who might already have the Adobe tool, so not an extra sale for Adobe there. Or they might have used butterflies to change air currents, which focus down cosmic rays to directly flip bits on their computer to edit the image (C-x M-c M-butterfly if you are using Emacs).

Fun fact, we do not just orbit the galaxy in a circle, we also have a motion perpendicular to that circle. We oscillate up and down through the plane of the Milky Way. The Milky Way is super thin, like super ultra thin. If the Milky Way were a pancake, it would only be the thickness of a sheet of paper, a sad pancake indeed. However in terms of human scales it is still huge, so we have a large way to travel. Our galactic orbit is tilted as compared to the galactic plane, so throughout the cosmic year we move up and down as compared to the center. A motion of 100-200 light year, so pretty big. That orbit also has procession, so we move through different parts.

The galaxy itself is also moving, although at that scale it’s easier to think of the galaxy to be stationary and other galaxies moving towards or away from us. In general we are all moving towards a galaxy cluster known as “The Great Attractor” as it is the most massive (except for your mom).

It’s also often forgotten that our sun isn’t the only star moving in the galaxy. All of the stars orbit the galaxy in a lot of different orbits. And some don’t orbit at all, instead moving with escape velocity (or faster) to get flung outside of our galaxy. Some have their own orbit in companion dwarf galaxies that in turn orbit our own galaxy. It’s easy to think of a galaxy as a fixed thing, with all the stars in the same place moving together like on a disk. But this isn’t the case at all, stars aren’t bound together and can follow their own path. Over time their relative positions change and the constellations we know won’t exist anymore.

The structures we see in galaxies like spiral arms for example are only structures in the same way a wave in the ocean is a structure. It is clearly a thing that exists, with properties we can at least somewhat constrain (like size for example). But the water inside that wave is just water like everywhere else. At one point it’s part of the wave and then at some point it no longer is. It’s the same for stars, sometimes part of a structure, other times not (although it gets complicated quickly if you dig into the details)

  • I’ve never not seen that happen? It’s probably to prevent fraud and a lot of the time it’s just old people who fumble the payment and need actual assistance?

As long as the store person there can reset it remotely for me it’s fine, then I don’t have to wait and they don’t need to come over.

I think it’s different when the payment times out, I’ve had that happen when the payment terminal crashed for no reason. Then it automatically resets back, so you can try again. But a failed payment is different from a rejected payment.

  • The other day the payment wasn’t approved for me (broke AF). The terminal beeped, the checkout counter went to a “Please wait for a representative” screen and the tower next to my checkout station went blinking green.

Luckily a very nice lady from the store yelled from her workstation if I needed help. I said I didn’t, just broke and needed to use another card. She reset my counter with her terminal and I was good to go. But it definitely feels like you did something really wrong.

Not as bad as running through the checkout without paying tho. I saw a man with his daughter of about 5 or 6 I think. She had one of those kid carts and tried to run out as the father was trying to pay for the sandwiches they were buying. All of the alarms went off, flashing lights, beeping gates, audible alert, the whole shebang. The kid got really scared as everyone just laughed as the father said: Hold on honey, we actually need to pay. The staff could easily disable the alert, but had to manually reset the gates. They needed to call it off on their headsets as well and two times staff came running to check if everything was alright. That’s not a mistake the kid will make in the future I bet.

  • I’m really trying, but it’s so hard. So much turns out to be American if you look closely. It looks like a local company, which on closer inspection is owned by a parent company, which is owned by some sort of group entity, which is owned by big US Corp.

Just today I bought some chips/crisps (flat crunchy potato product), they were on promotion and my monkey brain said: “Yes tasty! Buy buy, buy now, eat later, tasty!”. It wasn’t till I was home I looked it up and jup, it’s ultimately owned by PepsiCo. Fuck…

Getting rid of all the digital services that are American or run on American owned infrastructure is hard as well. Even local services often use AWS or Azure. And I found it’s often pretty hard to find that out without actually getting the services, which is exhausting.

For some things it’s morally hard as well. I’ve been supporting a content creator for years now. He has a small community and we like to chat on Discord a lot. He lives in the US and streams on Twitch and YouTube. I would rather not use Twitch and YouTube or support him using PayPal for example. On the other hand, he’s a good dude, he didn’t vote for this shit. I consider him a digital friend and actually met him once. I’m not sure what to do, I’ve got very mixed feelings about it.

  • I really disliked all the switching back and forth to earth for useless drama scenes. I know they did this because money at Syfy was pretty tight at the time. But I want to watch a space sci-fi show, not a cheap daytime soap opera.

One of the things I liked about Atlantis was the feeling of being cut off from Earth. Being all on your own with little to no support. This made the stakes higher and all the new stuff a fun new adventure and mystery. This was done for obvious reasons, but I still liked the premise. With the constant communication through the stones, it felt like the team was just around the corner from Earth. Even though they were farther than anyone ever was. But it really didn’t feel like that.

Another issue was the potential and all of the stuff they teased. They could do so much and there was so much interesting stuff just peeking around the sides. But the show had so much issues in the production, none of it was ever explored or paid off.

It ended up very lame and a total failure in my eyes. I’ve only seen the show twice, where I’ve seen SG1 at least 30 times and SGA a dozen times.
