  • If your manager won’t hear anything negative about Vibelord, polish up your resume. There’s nothing you can do to change the culture of your team if the boss isn’t on board with it.

Not sure what kind of person your boss is, but if you want to try to win him over, try to figure out what might sway him. If he’s technically illiterate, talk to him about best practices (like, I dunno, code reviews) and cite reliable sources and data if you think that would help. Avoid calling out Lord Vibington, the main thing is to put a picture into your boss’s head of what this could/should look like. He might not realize that these issues are preventable.

The goal here is to get your boss to take more ownership of the team’s culture, and start insisting on preventative measures. Mr Viberator will either have to conform, or there will be increasing friction between him and the boss.

  • Conservatism, by definition, wants to keep things the way they are. And the only way to hold that view is if you ignore, deny, or dehumanize those for whom the current system isn’t a problem.

So when we as a society identify systemic issues, conservatives will always be opposed to fixing them. It’s the heart of their ideology.

Not trying to beat a dead horse, I’m mostly posting this for other readers to understand why they and you have experienced stuff like this.

  • Yeah, I think the somatic and verbal components were supposed to give away casters (making the sorcerer’s Subtle Spell incredibly valuable socially), but it seems like a lot of DMs ignore or minimize it. But yeah, things like a simple persistent Detect Magic field, especially in critical areas, would make perfect sense. In a high magic setting, every vendor having a trinket that grants them Detect Magic continuously wouldn’t be out of the question.
