4·13 days agoSignal stores keys in plain text on the desktop client for legacy installs or Flatpak users (and is also highly centralised on AWS servers, hence why it went down last year with the AWS outage), so it’s not without faults either. Doesn’t mean I don’t still like it (I use it daily!), but its also not really a substitute for Discord or another application like it.
I also would not put much trust in Stoat, not yet anyways, they aren’t scaling well and are seemingly lukewarm at best on Federation. Do like their UI though, easily one of the best Discord-like experiences so far. If they integrate with Matrix one day, they would easily become the premiere front end for it.

13·2 months agoYes, but Minecraft was on sale for a year before it ever went into “Beta,” back before it was in Alpha even. In fact, it wasn’t until one of the last Alpha updates that the earliest semblance of “Minecraft” as we know it really began to appear. The Beta updates added a lot of core features we take for granted in the game, like beds for sleeping, tall grass for seeds, redstone repeaters, pistons, sprinting, hunger, etc.

(May seem hyperbolic, but we are talking about 70 year old boomers trying to make regulations for video games. I’m not sure I have the most positive view of the potential outcome)

Android@lemmy.world•GrapheneOS being targeted by FranceEnglish
1·3 months agoWell see, that’s the thing, GrapheneOS itself is fine, I really don’t have any doubts about that in the near future (long term is another thing, but that’s less so due to Graphene’s actions and more so about Google’s). Though CalyxOS was my true favourite, with it on hiatus currently I am fine with using GrapheneOS, I enjoy it a lot actually. I may stick with it even if/when CalyxOS does come back. It’s not perfect, I do wish they integrated more of LineageOS’s features into it like CalyxOS did (they won’t, but I can hope at least), and because of the enhanced security measures app installations (from any source) seem to take far longer than on CalyxOS. But overall, it’s been a very good experience.
The devs themselves are extremely toxic to outsiders, but at least they do see quite willing to help out those who do use GOS, I’ve never really seen any major complaints there. For the long term, I know the GOS devs are rather critical about the Linux kernel underlying the Android OS (because yeah, ofc they are…), so there’s some talk of them eventually making their own OS. That’s the point I’d leave and go elsewhere, because the only other option besides Android I’d try is a Linux-based mobile OS, not some creation of the GOS team that I imagine wouldn’t be fun to deal with. But again, that’s likely a long ways off, save Google doing something really dumb (dumber than what they’ve been doing recently I mean).

Android@lemmy.world•GrapheneOS being targeted by FranceEnglish
4·3 months agoCalyxOS was the same way. The GOS devs (and Daniel in particular) made CalyxOS sound like it was created by the Devil himself. Yet, on the flipside, the CalyxOS team typically had little if anything to say about GOS. I think they were even complimentary of some of the things they did. The GOS devs really like creating their own form of “Satanic Panics” to then have an enemy to fight against. Which is a shame because otherwise GOS is a fantastic creation overall, it’s what I’m using now that CalyxOS is sorta on hiatus.

Android@lemmy.world•GrapheneOS being targeted by FranceEnglish
51·3 months agoPeople malicious towards us are also using it as an opportunity to spread libel/harassment conteM targeting our team, raid our chat rooms and much more. /e/ and iodéOS are both based in France, and are both actively attacking GrapheneOS. /e/ receives substantial government funding. Both are extremely non-private and secure which is why France is targeting us while those get government funding.
Ya know, I’d take this claim a lot more seriously if this wasn’t the 100th time they’ve claimed this about someone, or basically anyone, that isn’t them… I like GrapheneOS, I use GrapheneOS, this is being typed from a Pixel running GrapheneOS… But the developers have long since been known for being extremely toxic in nature towards anyone and everyone they deemed as a challenger. CalyxOS (what I used before), LineageOS, Murena, iodeOS, even the Linux kernel itself… Not to mention the personal attacks on people like Louis Rossman.
I want to take these claims seriously… But unfortunately I can’t without actual, legitimate proof.

+1 for a Helix home.
