    Parents: you need to read lots of book in your free time to get smart and go to collage.

    ~~~ Many years later ~~~
    Me: I would like to attend university next year. I will pursue an education in literature to achieve my goal of becoming a published author.
    Parents: you will not! There is no success as an author, I will not support you going to to school for such a waste.
      You really don’t need a degree in literature to become a published author. That’s like getting a degree in media studies so you can become a youtuber. Yeah, you could do it, and it may give you some advantages, but like… You’re already literate, right? Besides that, taking a class or two on literature or creative writing would give you a lot of the skills you need to get you on your way, which you can easily do while pursuing another degree that ensures greater monetary security or (less easily) at a community college while also working.
      I’m not saying that the system that begets this thinking is good, but it is the one we live under.
        I know…college is a joke for a lot of careers.
        I made up this situation pointing out the opposing stereotypes of books and authors.
        Reads lots of books = smart person who has lots of potential in life.
        Writes lots of books = bum who can barley pay rent.
          I was going to ignore it but then you did it again and so now I can’t help but be a pedantic ass: it’s spelled “college”. Collage is those art pieces made of scraps of other art/media
        It’s an extremely large collage, they have to charge admission to afford the maintenance on it.
      English degrees are great if you plan to go into law.
      To earn money while hoping you make it as an author because otherwise you’ll either starve or become an office clerk.
