Politics is downstream from culture, as Andrew Breitbart once said.

Have you ever read Confucius? He’s the very definition of blinkered conservatism. The guy thought the first emperors were morally pure.

Absolutely, extremely conservative, and it predates Christianity by hundreds of years. But are we going to say they fear and hate everything? I have a sneaking suspicion that the statement was only intended to be referring to White American religious conservatives. The world is a big big place. Broad generalizations apply broadly and can have connotations that aren’t intended.

Confucianism it at at least a close mate to fear and hatred. If you start with the assumption that your culture is the most perfect, it doesn’t necessarily imply fear and hatred of other cultures, but it’s a short step that is easily (and fatuously) justified.

The colloquial definition of bigotry is a catchall term for hatred of other people: racism, sexism etc. The dictionary definition of bigotry is to believe you’re right without resort to reason, simply because you believe it. The two definitions aren’t the same, but people who fit the dictionary definition easily slide into the other definition.
