If they have a vehicle, then basic maintenance. I’m not even talking about oil changes, but I’ve shown people in their 40s how to do things like fill up the windshield washer fluid reservoir.

Pop the hood, look for this symbol

Open it up. If you live somewhere it doesn’t freeze, you can fill it with water (distilled will keep minerals from accumulating on sprayers, but tap is better than nothing). If freezing is a possibility, fill it with windshield washer fluid, usually available at any gas station. Reclose the cap.

The last time I showed someone this was in a rental car. She was driving and got mud splattered on the windshield. Panic ensued as the wipers just smeared the mud and generally did not improve the situation without fluid. So we make it to the closest gas station and take care of her and the vehicle and showed her how to do it. Driving was much better being able to see. Anyway, just one of those things that isn’t important until it’s very very important.

The picture must not be displaying, but it’s like the top stone of an arch or part of a rainbow 🌈 that represents the windshield and a whale spray across it 🐳. Sometimes the cap is blue. If you look on the thingy near the steering wheel that activates the sprayer it should have the symbol on it as well.

As for how often to check, it’ll depend on how much you use it. I’m in an arid area so I rarely use mine and it gets filled when I get my oil changed. If you’re not sure, you can try once a month and increase the time between if it doesn’t need filled in that time period. Some newer vehicles may have warning lights that are the same symbol for low levels in which case you don’t have to worry about it at all until it’s lights up.
