I just read 1984 for the first time a few months ago and I gotta say, I was not expecting it to end on such a downer.
No, but it is definitely fitting for the idea Orwell is trying to get across. The unrelenting weight of an ever suppressive nation is far too much for just one individual. They are just individuals on a large scale.
