Vampire Bloodlines with the part in the hotel was the single most scary part of any horror game I’ve ever played, and I’ve played a lot of them.
The irony, of course, is that you’re a vampire but the ghosts are still really scary.
I have a hard time distinguishing horror games from suspense ones, so don’t crucify me please.
Alien: Isolation
And then favorite horror literature inspired exploration game: Sunless Sea
Alien Isolation is a great game I never got to finish!
I recall it dragging slightly, but being worth it. What made it for me was the atmosphere, and how true the art direction felt.
I’m horrendous at finishing games… I have 500+ games on steam and you can imagine how many I’ve actually even played lol. But I want to play it trough tho, hope I do it once.
Overall I love that game. Definitely GOTY 2014 for me.
I think there is a point about midway through where you could stop playing and still have seen the majority of what it has to offer. To be fair to the game they up the ante for the final couple of hours but the late-midgame drags.
Maybe Dead Space. It was so unique at the time and the atmosphere was amazing.
Alien Isolation is also a master piece. It makes you perfectly believe you’re in the movie and the suspense is intense.
RE0 was fantastic too
I can’t pick, they all have their moods
I totally get that mate. Both you mention is amazing :)
What were they thinking getting rid of the item box in RE0? Absolute madness. The train level intro is some peak resi tho.
Personally I think the 2002 remake of the original Resident Evil is my favourite for a pure horror experience. I would have a hard time picking between that and the original RE4 for best game in the series.
Honourable mention to RE7 - if the quality didn’t dip halfway through then it might take the top spot.
Penumbra Overture and Black Plague; Dead Space 1 and 2
Mine is Amnesia: The Dark Descent. It’s also a game that made me even more interested in horror.
The Suffering
I wonder how it holds up these days.
Quake.
Sonoma a close second.
