Question of the week:
Are there any live-service games, such as Fallout 76, that you’re currently playing? Anything like Helldivers 2 or any other multiplayer games?
Second tagging of people that were here last time or participated in the thread last time:
Okay, done.
Replaced League of Legends with a punching bag and running. Real life is now my video game.
I’m currently playing the halo master chief collection beat halo 2 last night and will start halo 3 today.
Good luck!
What are your favorite video game genres?
I think that all the derivatives of the roguelike genre are my favourite. My big personal reason is that I’m very inconsistent, so I really hate getting stuck on a die and retry loop because it’s going to take twice the time as the average player to get unstuck. Roguelikes completely shatter the concept of attempting the same exact thing twice, you can only master the mechanics as a whole to succeed without knowing exactly what to do.
I also find roguelikes are great because you can just pick 'em up and play for a bit. You don’t have to remember what you were doing, where in the story you are, etc. So, it’s an excellent genre when you don’t have a lot of time to invest in the game.
Good answer.
One of my fav rougelikes is starbreak, it’s a simple 2d platformer thats old and not updated (nor moderated) but I always go back to this game. Recently been cracking out on realm of the mad god, bullet hell shooter style mmorpg, its simple and fun. Maybe you’d like them
I played Realm of the Mad God when I was a kid, really good time! Gotta check Starbreak then
Been really enjoying Dr. Robotnik’s Ring Racers lately (the newly-released sequel to SRB2 Kart), really love how its new mechanics set it apart from other kart racers and make it feel more distinctly “Sonic”, and the tracks are so great looking, I can’t believe there’s still the Doom engine underneath all this
Also just feels a lot more like a complete game of its own as opposed to a mod of another game, with its new full menu UI and its focus on singleplayer content (SRB2 Kart didn’t even have any other than basic time trials)
very interesting
I just finished The Bookwalker: Thief of Tales which was a fun little game. It’s not too long, but a neat concept. and just picked up Hades 2, haven’t played any multiplayer games in a while here.
Oh, I want that first game.
definitely grab it if you get a chance
Stellaris. New DLC is worth it.
Also Eiyuden Chronicles - a little flop for a spiritual continuation of the greatest jrpg series ever but not that bad, just a little disappointing
“just a little disappointing”
Seems to match up with what others have told me about that game.
Still playing Stardew valley, patiently waiting for the 1.6 update to come to switch. I also have it for PC so I played on the new meadowlands farm which is awesome, but I’m more used to switch controls so PC is weird and I’m more slow. It’s a big reason I want to get a steamdeck (also to move games off my computer since it’s practically dying from doing both school and games).
I would like to go back to playing Baldur’s Gate 3 but my PC is not strong enough. I still want to try out TF2 but playing online scare me. Once I get a steam deck I will definitely play the Tomb Raider Survivor trilogy, I played the first one religiously on my Xbox 360 when I was young so it’d be nice to play the sequels. I also want to play that “not my neighbour” game, I’ve never played “papers please” but games with a similar premise always intrigued me. Disco Elysium seems popular on here so I’ll check out too. I’m always looking for commie positive or neutral games to try so there’s that.
So nothing much has changed for me since the last thread. I’m in my spring/summer semester of school which means constant cramming (it’s an expedited semester) so not much time for games. I should have freed up time in July and august, though, which will be nice.
“Stardew Valley”
I have yet to play that one, even after all these years.
I’m biased but I think it’s a great game. There’s the farming but also mining and monster slaying, lots of secrets and treasures. It’s just a good time (but also stressful at points, but still fun).
Still heavily involved with stardew valley 1.6. I’m not playing any multiplayer games, but I have been dabbling with a bit of suzerain. I’ve pissed off pretty much everyone who isn’t a radical leftist, and I suspect that I’m about to be ousted in a military coup soon. It’s fun.
My favourite genre would be coop, so games like It takes two, L4D, DRG, Operation Tango, We were Here, Lovers in a dangerous spacetime, unravel 2, overcooked…
Co=op’s great.
I decided to try Stellaris. The changes post 2.0 are not as complex as I thought. I still miss the wormhole and warp drives though. I also liked picking between laser/bullets/torpedoes. Wish they would bring that back. In this game, I’m a Megacorporation that has almost turned the entire galaxy into it’s subsidiary. Only 1 empire remains, they have a few subjects of their own, but it’s just a matter of time until they’re torn apart and become a subsidiary. After that, all that is left is to destroy Unbidden which should be appearing any time now.
Stellaris never fails!
Well I play the classic genre of live service games: MMORPGs. In fact I’ve been quite hyped to play Guild Wars 2. I’m almost finishing the retunr to achievements and getting a legendary amulet.
That said I never got into the modern take of live-service. Never played fortnite or any looter-shooters. Even Fall Guys felt like it tried too hard to keep me playing (and paying).
There’s going to be a Guild Wars 3 now. Well, I said that last time, and someone told me that it will likely not see the light of day.
FarCry 2 is a habit of mine because I love the early 2000s war-torn Africa setting. All the enemies are racists, conscripts or mercenaries and the guns rust and fall apart. It does have an unfortunate contingent of Rhodesia/Apartheid fetishists.
Finished Subnautica, what a great game.
Going through Fallout 4, it’s garbage quality but there is something to the gameplay loop that makes me go in a trance and spend a ton of time on it, prob should just stop playing.
I also purchased the entire Yakuza bundle, so i have enough gaming content for years.
As for live service games, i play Honkai Star Rail and Genshin Impact. Which IMHO, are very high quality games even if they’re toxic gachas.
Mostly I play factory management style games. Top 3 being Factorio, Dyson Sphere Program, and Mindustry. Though they’ve been more mental effort than Ive been able to muster recently.
Then I am also playing Last Epoch as a co-op game because it’s been a way to connect with an old friend from school (since we live in different cities it’s hard to connect in person).
So nothing too exciting or new.
Mindustry is one of the very few factory games I have never tried (really put the automation tag on something and I will probably buy it). It always seemed like it leaned much more into the tower defense side over the factory side.
As someone who usually plays factory games with stuff like biters turned off, do you think there is much there still?
It is definitely heavier on the tower defense side. I also usually turn biters off in Factorio, but I found that Mindustry to be well balanced between the logistics and tower defense aspects. You have to build up both constantly, unlike Factorio where you just over build defense and then wait for that to fail before thinking about it again. In Factorio, defense is a nuisance mostly, but Mindustry it’s integral to the gameplay loop. Not sure if that answers it for you. I don’t think I’d recommend it unless you wanted that aspect of the game.
Just finished Dyson (technically)! I love it so much. If anybody is interested, go in blind and figure out how everything works on your own. It was really fun going back through my old factories and seeing how shitty they were in comparison. I’ve been avoiding Factario for a long time cause I’m worried I’ll get sucked in for good.
