What do we all think about Bridgestone coming back to F1 as a tyre manufacturer?
Seems like Pirelli isn’t able to deliver precisely what’s asked and have been making “as close as they can” tires, so sure let’s give Bridgestone a shot.
Was this confirmed or is this still being decided?
I dont think a tyre competition would work in this era.
On a side note, thanks for making this mikeyd, it was much needed. Can it be pinned at the top?
I imagine that if they win the tender nothing much will change other than the logo.
I wonder if it would be more interesting to dispose of the monopoly and grades and simply keep the requirements of having tyre changes - perhaps two changes required for some tracks?
It would probably also require banning exclusive contracts with certain teams, like they had back in the day.
I noticed the c/Formula 1 on Lemmy.world is not on the list of partners.
Is there any communication or coordination between those two? While this one seems more active, the other one has more members (strangely).
I posted early on in that sub about merging/coordinating with this one and the mod replied they weren’t closing the sub and removed my post. Note there is (or at least was at the time) nothing in the community or instance rules prohibiting discussion of other communities. And also… like… 90% of Lemmy is new users finding new communities (including that mod, whose account was like 4d old at the time). Prohibiting discussion of other communities is just… wildly against the spirit of what’s happening right now. Neither mod group seems to acknowledge the other in at-mentions either.
Anyway, it’s a small data point but my somewhat speculative take is the mod over there is power tripping and I’ve avoided it since.

The sub numbers can be confusing to read. I believe when viewing the sub count of a remote community, you see only subscribers from your instance… But when viewing a local community you see all subscribers. At any rate, if you look at each community on its home server you see:
- This sub has ~3k subscribers: https://lemmy.ml/c/formula1
- The other has like ~1.5k: https://lemmy.world/c/formula1
To my knowledge we do not have any rules against talking about other communities. I will bring it up with the other mods. With the way Lemmy works there will be other subs of the same name with cross subs. I’m going to be subbed to any F1 sub I can find.

Allowing discussion of other communities does seem to me to be the reasonable take, especially given how early days things are with Lemmy. I hope it remains allowed here. If there’s a rule to be enforced, I would suggest to frame it around promotion in general. Announcing the creation of a related thing (Lemmy community or other) seems quite reasonable. Mentioning it occasionally in on-topic comments also seems reasonable (which is how I would characterize this thread). If a person or group engages in a concerted advertising campaign, an excessive-promotion rule could provide a framework to limit that without impinging on organic discussion of other F1 resources/communities.

I certainly get this approach, and encourage folks to do what works for them. For me, I dislike getting lots of dupe posts about major news, and I think that outside of “frontpage” size communities like tech/news Lemmy is still too small to support multiple thriving communities that have 100% overlap. So I’m hoping to see people naturally self-organize into a single main F1 community and as I see this one with better governance and more activity… it’s the one I’m trying to help grow through my contributions.
Niche subs with partial overlap I definitely support though. Happy to have a separate formuladank, and I’d happily join
/c/McLarenMemes
or/c/LandoSocials
to get more on their niche. But for raceday discussion and my main source of news on the sport, I’m hoping people choose to join into a bigger community rather than have a bunch of under baked vanity communities that each lack the critical-mass to self-sustain.
Thanks for making the effort to coordinate this and post your experience. It makes me feel more confident sticking with this community
It seems to have more people commenting though. At least a lot of different profiles.
Yeah, racethread wasn’t really active yet so it’s unfortunate the communities are split on that front
First day on Lemmy today - Are there the equivalent of Session Threads on here?
Due to the size of the community and lack of bots, we currently run a race weekend thread which is pinned to the top currently.
I would suggest at least a seperate race thread. A full weekend one was kinda bothersome towards the end of the race last time.
Tried an account on a smaller instance since yesterday to avoid hammering the main ones.
Seems like the posts/comments I made on here weren’t coming through to other instances though.

Where would be the right place to discuss the new rules that were just announced? The thread itself seems to be locked…
Yeah, I think so. We’ve had a lot of meta posts of late dedicated to the rules of this community. I don’t feel the need for another one to announce they’re up and have further discussion.
If it turns out that this is needed, we can always make such a dedicated post.
