The plot badly needs some pruning shears taken to it; to say that it moves at a snails pace is an insult to snails. Like, why did we need an entire faux high school arc? There’s plot-relevant stuff there, but they can cut most of that and the game would be better. Filler arcs in a story that’s…what, ten games now? That’s why this series is still obscure, despite there being a lot to like here.

If you need something to scratch that JRPG itch, you can do a lot worse, and there’s a reason this series shows up on “hidden gems” list. But…damn. There’s so much content and story, and a fair chunk is little better than filler.

Calling out the Jenis Academy stretch would be bold in the fandom, lol. I mostly agree with you though, I think that whole chapter was a low point for the series.

Sky SC in particular has some brutal pacing, so it’d be reassuring for the future remake if they shuffled up this game a bit.

I’m not sure I’m going to like this. Cold steel was when I started losing interest in the saga, and the jump to full 3D had a bit to do with it.

Trails FC was a fun game. I’m working my way through Second Chapter now. The PC release came out 2004 in Japan and 2014 in the US so idk how “retro” it is. Also the original PC release was already in 3D, so I’m not sure why the author is stressing that the remake is in 3D. Am I missing something?

As an aside, does this author always write random words in bold in all their articles ? 🤣

The characters were just 2D sprites from what I recall. And the isometric camera kind of gave it a 2D feel even if it wasn’t actually 2D.

Anyway, hopefully this isn’t a Switch exclusive as that would be lame.

They were that style of sprite derived from prerendered 3D art that was popular in the late 90’s/early 2000’s.

It’s unfortunately looking like ports of this game are going to come later.

Ah so maybe I’m just reading the article too closely, as it says full 3D for the game’s fields and towns, and doesn’t mention the character models.

Thanks! I had to open in new browser to get it to load. Wow!

3D characters and a free behind the shoulder camera. The game looks great!
