May not seem possible when the encounter takes you into a dialog next to the death pit so that you are pushed off on the first round of combat before you are even allowed a turn.

But a tip to those with that problem: While one character is in dialog, theres a button left bottom of the screen to switch character. You can switch out and position the rest of the team somewhere better.
