To me it’s like a different take on the Google t-rex that jumps over cactuses when your internet is down.

- Disbanded advocacy division.
- Went all in on AI.
- Bought an ad company.
Mozilla as you knew it as dead. Firefox carcass will remain, and various forks are keeping it alive, but if someone still wants to have an alternative to Google’s Chromium/Blink it needs a new entity to take over.

They just stopped developing it. They haven’t added anything useful to Firefox in a long time. Furthermore, they are also ignoring popular new open standard support, which is critical in their supposed mission of building a better open and accessible internet to all. And they’re also removing a lot of long-standing features like RSS support for no good reason.
And it’s reflected in the numbers. They went from 206M active clients in 2020 to 163M in 2024. And considering market share it’s even more catastrophic. They used to have ~30% of the market share at their peak in 2010 now it’s down to 2% today.
What they did lately is various side projects like a VPN, email masking service or data breach notification service. Would be cool projects on its own, but when they are coming at the cost of Firefox nobody gives a shit. And in the last few years, all their focus is on AI, which literally no Firefox user asked for.
I feel like Firefox has run great for years now but honestly I didn’t realize all this was going on. Are they really not updating it?
not updating it is a stretch - a lot of people (myself included) are just sick of mozilla announcing all this slop like AI and adtech which we believe are counter to mozilla’s entire purpose, whilst leveraging firefox to add “features” that are almost entirely related to said slop rather than focusing on what people actually care about - a solid browser that competes with chrome
everything of value that mozilla does directly relies on firefox. firefox gives them a seat at the table with google, apple, microsoft, etc to fight for users on standards and the future of the web

I’m watching ladybird with interest. But it’s going to be sometime before it’s ready. Current versions break quite easily. But it’s good to see something else being developed at least
Maybe they can catch the interest of ex-firefox developers, their expertise and should help a lot.
