Any other comic strip, I would assume that’s a person in a ham suit. This being Heathcliff however, I have to assume that it is a giant, living ham. Sentient creature or vacuous meat golem? I dare not speculate further.
As far as I can remember Heathcliff wears costumes. But no one else does unless he does. And Meat Cowboy and Christmas Ham have no face hole indicating that there is a person inside. Which brings us to support your idea that these are not costumes. Is Heathcliff secretly an Eldritch horror comic? Normalization of sentient meat people without the Cronenberg body horror?
