This is top level enshittification. You’re showing the user an ad that is, as OP says, the opposite of what they want, and then charging Truth Social for the impression. Magnificent!

‘Targeted advertising’ is shockingly untargeted. As the underpinning of our digital economy, the value of online advertising is dangerously overinflated.

I occasionally buy tools, and damn right I research them until I know they’re “buy it for life” quality

Then I spend the next few weeks getting bombarded by ads for a tool I will never ever buy

It’s targeting what they want to sell you depending on what target group you are, it’s never been what might actually interest you personally.

The only time I ever click on an ad for anything is because I want to see exactly how much they are charging for whatever clearly ridiculous thing they’re advertising. Meaning I was never planning on buying it. Thankfully, that is rare.

Louis Rossmann made a good Video about this. TL;Dr: when some company does something shitty, instead of just fleeing to the next big company and hoping that they will not do the same and blaming everyone who is still using their stuff of the old company, you need to actually fight back against the company doing it. Privacy oriented people are few and far beetween, so the „Voting with you wallet” thing will not even make a .01 mark on their revenue

“….without discriminating on the basis of political ideology.”

Isn’t discrimination like, the entire purpose of what Truth Social is about?

They should be taken down for false advertisement etc. You don’t get to claim not to discriminate on political ideology if you also censor and delist posts that you disagree with.

The type of people that truth social is designed for (conservatives, rightists, fascists) are often shunned for discriminating against minorities. Here they’re trying to pull a “no u”, to say that akshually we’re the ones who are discriminated against in mainstream media, and we’re gonna build our own platform with no discrimination, making us more virtuous than you. They don’t believe they actually have less discrimination, to them “discrimination” is a playing token in the game of morals. Actually, it would be more accurate to say that it doesn’t matter whether or not they believe they have less discrimination, because having less discrimination was never the goal. The card says moops.

If you read the reviews on the play store, it seems like people get banned left and right for posting factual truth. So much for “freedom of speech”. Not like anyone expected that in the first place from a fascist echo chamber, but hey.

Note that this may occasionally interfere with things. I was having trouble with in-flight WiFi last time I flew, and I once I switched the Private DNS setting back to Automatic, it suddenly worked.

True. Public wifi doesn’t like it when you use your own DNS servers cause it makes it slightly harder for them to spy on you and inject ads into web pages.

Thankfully all you gotta to is switch the DNS setting to Off (or Automatic), then re-enable it when you’re home. Takes 10 seconds.

The main reason I mention it is that it’s super easy to set up, even for someone not very techy, but since it’s hidden in the settings, the non-techy person is probably going to completely forget about it and have no clue what to do when the public WiFi doesn’t work.

By the way, the official Pixelfed app on the Play Store seems to have Google AdMob integrated if you care about that kind of thing. I’d recommend installing Pixelix or PixelDroid from the official F-Droid repositories instead.

Droid-ify client, which is an alternative client for F-Droid.

If you’ve never used F-droid, give it a go: https://f-droid.org/en/about/. It’s a FOSS package manager for Android and nothing more. All it does is host, install, update, and manage applications. No ads, no sponsored suggestions, no ranking. It has strict submission requirements, only serves FOSS apps, and prominently lists apps’ “anti-features” (tracking, reliance on third-party services, things you may not like).

Not a negative review, that was something positive but I don’t remember it exactly:
They are not 1:1 the same versions as in the playstore. As soon as in-app purchases are available. This means that you can only update the app via the same store and the other would require a new installation due to a different signature.

Sometimes F-Droid versions are missing stuff because they’re done by proprietary means on the Play Store versions. Push-notifications for example might be missing.

Sometimes you get more stuff. Play Store version of OsmAnd+ is paid while on F-Droid it’s free.

Apple is probably pushing that Ad free of charge. Considering how quickly Tim preemptively bent the knee just on the chance it would benefit him and the shareholders is obscene. I’ve always known Tim only cared about money. After all, that’s the only thing he did better than Steve Jobs. Now I know for sure that he’s a worthless selfish waste of a human being.

IANAL but I reckon there’s enough similarity for Polyend to consider chatting to their legal team. The Pixelfed logo is also actually (inverse) black on the apps, similar to the point where they’re just about the same if you squint.

Anybody whose been plant-based and/or vegan for some time can vouch that targeted ads very frequently are not about what’s actually relevant to the user, but more what their favorite corporate partners can try to gaslight you into believing is relevant. On both Facebook and YouTube I would get so many more ads and video results for animal products after making the switch, despite seeking out solely pb/vegan content and actively blocking and suppressing animal abuse content.
