Last year, the teams responsible for Pixel and Android were merged into one division, and Google today announced a “voluntary exit program.”

So, unless you’re enslaved, every job has a “voluntary exit”. It’s called “quitting”. What Zuck and his people are trying to do is downsize without the bad press that comes from… uh, firing people. I mean “downsizing”…

The difference here is that leaving would come with a severance package. Offering the same kind of severance package that a company would normally give during layoffs, but allowing people to selectively take it seems like a very reasonable way to handle reducing payroll.

I imagine that, if not enough people take the offer, they might then have layoffs so this seems like a pretty humane and nice way to handle a tough situation.

This is a pretty nice way of handling the situation really.

When you merge two groups like this there is redundancy created in mostly management roles, and they’re offering a severance package to anyone who wants to take it.

The alternative is just firing people who are now redundant. This is way nicer.
