Everyone always praises 3 but I grew up playing 2. I have nothing against HoMM 3 and enjoy it quite a bit, I just prefer HoMM 2 when I wanna get that nostalgia kick.
Still, amazing games.
Using this opportunity to plug https://github.com/ihhub/fheroes2
It’s the open source reimplementation of HoMM2. It’s fully playable, although the reimplemented AI plays much, much smarter than the original, which can be an upside or a downside for you.
There is also an android version, it works great on a tablet!
2 and 3 are both the best, and still going hard with fheroes2 and vcmi if anyone hasn’t chomped into them in a while.
There is Songs of Conquest which I think most HoMM players will appreciate. A modern wink to the series.
For me too, the pixel art style of it I really love. I’ve even tried one because I was perhaps that feels closer to two than three, but it’s just too unpolished and primitive vs two.
Three may very well be the superior game. Same with AOE. For most people the love is for two; which is the better game, but I’ve always reached back to 1.
(Now with the DE editions of those, those are the better games, get 2 with the Rome expansion)

Perhaps a DE version of HoMM will be released as well.
Gotta love the music and SFX. Total nostalgia.
I get the love for 3, but I’ve come to like 5 best. It’s easier on the eye and has way better use interface.
But if we’re talking Might and Magic, don’t forget Dark Messiah!
Ye I agree with that 5 is best as well. Sadly the formula is overplayed imho. I wish we got more games in the fantasy 4x but with different takes on combat systems.
I’m also on team HoMM5. Dark Messiah was tons of fun, kicking enemies off cliffs and using the ultimate telekinesis to gravity gun their asses away!
The third is the absolute best. No discussion! I’ve spend countless hours with friends as a kid, sitting around the computer, playing this game. Still do.
It’s always amazing to me how consistently it’s in the top 10 best sellers on GOG.
You’d think at some point everybody would have a copy, but month after month it’s in, or near, the top of the list.
Heroes of might and magic, along with extreme mismanagement, killed might and magic.
The RPGs were better.
Man, I gotta play the collections someday. I think I got all of them on GOG
If you want to play 6,7 & 8 play the might and magic merged mod and just roll with the slight scuff. It’s worth not having the original experience for the most part. The two xeen games also serve as a stand in for all games before them and you can pretty much skip the early ones.
Do not play 9. Even as a curiosity. It was the death of the studio, was half finished, and will just be one of the most frustrating games you will play if you even slightly try to play as intended. I still feel the disappointment of booting it up, having just finished a playthrough of 8 in preparation, and getting an hour in and realizing that maybe crusaders of might and magic was a sign that the magic of the studio was gone forever.
10 is okay if you manage to like world of xeen, but you’ll hate it if you like the 6, 7, 8 trilogy.
The two Xeen games are still such a fuzzy memory to me. Being able to install them into the same folder was so wtf at the time. 😅
Everyone knows kings bounty was the o.g.
Agreed, have you tried Eador Genesis tho?
In particular with the New Horizons mod.
The turn based battles are badass and very tactical, though it is hard as nails.
