The singer’s 1988 song “Fast Car” – turned into a massive country and pop hit this year in a cover version by country superstar Luke Combs – was named song of the year at the 2023 CMA Awards, making Chapman the first Black songwriter to win in the category.
Though she wasn’t able to attend the awards show, Chapman reacted to her win in a statement which read: “I’m sorry I couldn’t join you all tonight. It’s truly an honor for my song to be newly recognized after 35 years of its debut. Thank you to the CMAs and a special thanks to Luke and all of the fans of ‘Fast Car.’”
They also just don’t have to do that because it was already presumed—contemporary country fans, I should be clear. The type of people who listen to that type of music are generally angry young white guys who like drinking and are in college.
The country music space has been invaded by the right wing “patriot” crowd.
I mean, they didn’t really have to do that. It’s already been done:
Tracy Chapman - Fast car
Luke Combs - Fast Car (Official Live Video)
He did it respectfully and didn’t change any of the words, even when he calls himself a girl.
Who doesn’t like The Tracy Chapman version tho?

Ok, but that doesn’t support the idea that people don’t like the song or more specifically her version.
She was nominated for song of the year and record of the year for fast car. She won the Grammy for best female pop performance, for that song.
We love her song so much she won a cma 35 years later.
This is a super false equivalence.
Except we’re talking about country music specifically, not the general awards.

Always has been.
