Since the beginning of 2025, more than 160 people have died from poisoning after drinking bootleg alcohol in Turkey. How did going out for a drink become so dangerous?
I don’t drink for all sorts of health reasons without even needing this additional health risk.
I guess my hope is that the new risk helps those in Turkey who want to quit convince themselves to quit.
Wow, this article is scientifically weak.
Alcohol poisoning refers to an overdose of ethanol but these people are dying from methanol poisoning.
Methanol is not added because it is cheaper. Rather you can extremely cheaply produce ethanol synthetically via a process that also produces smaller, varying amounts of methanol. You can’t taste the difference between a drink that will kill you and one that won’t because it is still mainly ethanol. Legal ethanol is made by fermentation followed by distillation. People keep making and selling the illegal stuff because mostly it doesn’t kill people. Except when it does.
This seems less like an issue with a specific religion and more like an issue of very sad petty angry people being put in charge trying to enforce unjust laws for the sole purpose of having unrestricted control over the populace.
Unjust laws enforced entirely with the purpose of eliminating people the government considers to be “undesirables”
Sadly it sounds a lot like what is happening here in the United States right now
