How can you cancel a degree. It’s a proof of work and meeting requirements for graduation. You can’t “un-work” what they did.
Only between the student and the university. Towards third parties, a degree is not a proof of work. It’s just a certification whose value depends on trust in the certifier. Of course they have the power to revoke it.
There are more legitimate reasons they could do so, like if evidence of plagiarism on part of the student appears after the degree was granted.
Honestly I would consider it theft, if I paid tens of thousands of dollars only for it to be revoked later that would be bullshit. Like buying a car with cash and then the dealership repoing it because they don’t like your political stance three years later.
Unless there is a clause somewhere in some contract that was signed I would be surprised if that were even legal.
Americans: please cancel our student debt
America: cancels your degree
Isn’t this just cancel culture by the Right? The claim is that they are accused of “wrong think”.
To be clear, I support the students’ right to protest, and a lot of cancel culture “victims” were rightly shunned for shitty takes or bad behaviors.
this goes beyond anything that could be described as “cancel culture”.
RIP Columbia university
Now we know that a degree from there after 2029 means they support genocide.
It sounds like it’s a shit hole anyway.
Is it possible to check how many convicted thieves, rapists and/or murderers still hold their degrees? You know, just for fun, to see where their priorities are…
I’d say check the nazis too but theyre more of the education by “faith” types than education by actual education.
In all seriousness though, has a US university ever stripped a nazi or holocaust denyer of their degree? Surely that ideology is just as, if not more harmful?
Well trump still has his.
2026 enrolment numbers are gonna be lit!
Fascists
Reminds me of the lists of prohibited words universities would send to students that are banned.
Any better sources?
Search engines are pretty cool just so you know…

I think there are some cases, not these 22 students of course, but some cases that do warrant revoking a degree over moral implications. I’m rarely one to agree with blanket statements.
Imo such cases would be when someone can prove that you didn’t earn your degree honestly, or when you have amassed a history of academic dishonesty after the fact. But personally I don’t think crimes (even murder) should result in you losing your degree.

Why does it depend on how they were protesting? Why is violence relevant to a university degree in the first place?
A degree should only be revoked in the case of cheating or other cases of gross scientific missconduct relating to said degree, no?
For example, I think the unabomber was a terrible human being, but his crimes should be handled by the police. Not by the uneversites he worked for or got his degree from.
This very much resembles some sort of social credit system.
You’re speaking to a right-winger, a master of hypocrisy and doublethink. Don’t wear out your keyboard.

I think you’re missing the point… Political actions after they’ve received a degree should be irrelevant to said degree.
Good idea! Let’s take their high school degree too, while we’re at it. Maybe revoke citizenship? Let’s see what else we can think of
Dropping the /s, this is a form of double punishment which is or at least should be illegal (not from the US, so I don’t know local laws). If someone without a university degree commits a crime, they should get the same punishment.
Palestine under attack: s’all good man
Not liking it: hold on now, let’s take a closer look at why you dislike a genocide
Innocent until proven guilty. No one should be expelled from ANY school for protesting.
Only until they have been found guilty of the crimes you mentioned.
This is exactly how I think it should be, unless they have substantial evidence to show they were violently protesting, there should be no repercussions for doing so.
Revoke the J6 insurrectionists, got it
