I really like the way power ups were handled in Demon Slayer, it felt much more ‘earned’ and it was nice to see the consequences of ‘powering up’ requiring the characters to go through major recovery each time
making a character suffer in order to get a power up is really such a trivially simple and reliable way to make things feel earned and it’s kinda baffling it’s not used more/better
it’s like the hero’s journey and other writing tools, it’s predictable but nonetheless it just fucking works.
