The Internet Archive’s ‘Great 78 Project’ digitizes historical recordings to preserve musical heritage, but in 2023 the initiative led to major record labels filing a copyright lawsuit. The financial stakes soared last month when the labels proposed to update their claim to $693 million in statutory damages. A recent filing suggests that due to significant progress in settlement discussions, it may not come to that.
Imagine risking to destroy such an essential service that is offered for free, just because they think they could have had more mony. It does not even change anything in the past. They could agree on a deal for the future though to make them happy
damages
Think of all the 78s they didn’t sell because of this …
only one group in that lawsuit screwed over musicians and artists and it wasn’t internet archive.
God, I hate copyright.
The IA doesn’t have funds to pay what they’re demanding, so if there’s a settlement, it’ll be other concessions.
They’re going to burn down part of the IA library, aren’t they.
Most likely they’ll end up getting rid of that section. So I suggest anyone who is looking to keep that music alive start hoarding them if they haven’t already.
Greedy fuckers
