Nothing says this film is doing well like changing the title after months of advertisement campaigns.

Wait, I thought the movie was doing well? I haven’t seen it yet, but reading the article it seems like this is more of a PR stunt and marketing gimmick to align with what happens in the movie. Apparently it’s revealed they are the new Avengers, so spoilers for everyone (including me) who hasn’t seen it yet I guess.

Yeah, with the asterisk in the title and the discussion about it, I would think that this was the marketing plan from the start. The movie’s performance may have affected when exactly they decided to pull the trigger on the rebrand though.

Rumor has it that Marvel was worried it would bomb, and naming it “New Avengers” would put them in an awkward position moving forward. Thunderbolts was the backup-insurance-title basically.

Now that the movie seems to be doing well, it’s getting its proper title.

Yeah I thought it is doing well. Reviews have been pretty good and word of mouth seems to be decent as well. This is 100% a spoiler for those who haven’t watched it. I did think it’s quite soon from its release to them revealing it publicly like this though

Fortunately I’m not invested in the MCU as much as I once was. Probably worth chucking the spoiler in some spoiler tags though?

Actually maybe not? At this point I don’t know…

Like the Washington Football Team or Utah Hockey Club, we’re just waiting for the focus group data to refine the name

Odd. I think an asterisk in a movie title is pretty eye-catching.

For anyone confused: this isn’t coming out of nowhere,

    minor movie spoiler

it’s just the marketers trying to squeeze attention out of a spoiler at the end of the movie. They want to have their cake and eat it too by teasing the asterisk in the title as a mystery, then milking the reveal after a few days now that they assume anyone who cares about having that sort of thing spoiled has already seen it.

It’s still a strange marketing choice for a fairly successful movie a few days after release.
