    I’m an American immigrant in Germany, and every once in a while, another immigrant (mostly from Kosovo and Türkiye) will lean in and be like “it’s better financially in America, though, right?”

    I try to answer truthfully, that there’s a higher ceiling and a lower floor in the US. If you’re lucky, you could conceivably get very rich in most fields. If you’re unlucky, you’re fucked. My parents each had master’s degrees, but my mom had cancer for eight years and even with good insurance, we had to pay a lot of money out of pocket, putting us close to the poverty line.
