Before I deep dive into my option about a game. I just want to preface that while some people believe that we should be forced into whichever house the sorting hat puts us in. We all can choose which house we feel we belong in. Like Harry in the first book, and in the movies and in this game So please keep this in mind since we are talking about a game here.

I’ve been playing the Harry Potter games since the PS1 and absolutely love the Zelda inspired games for the system and the RPG’s for the GameBoy Color. PS1 Hagrid an all. When the games moved to the PS2 they were better, but never felt as polished and often times felt short. Where I lost interest was the DS game for Goblet of Fire and the Trophy folder games on PS3. I saw my sister play them, but even she just sticks with the early PS1 and 2 games.

So while I’ve not played them in a while I can say I’ve seen Hogwarts from when consoles could first render it. To when it could render it well.

I know I’ve been in the future for a while now. But the little kid inside of me never realized it until I was walking from Hogwarts Castle into Hogsmeade and I looked back upon Hogwarts castle. I was breath taking and beautiful. A sight I’d never thought I would ever see in my life, outside of recreations in theme parks or fan videos.

And I think that’s a perfect way to describe this game, it is absolutely beautiful. Details are everywhere and a lot of attention was given to everything you will look at. Whether it’s Hogwarts or Hogsmeade, a Dragon Fighting Tent or the Forbidden Forest. The game is a visual feast especially for long time fans of the series.

However to get to that point, you’d need to get through some of the more… unpolished aspects of the game. Combat.

Now combat in Hogwarts Legacy isn’t bad, but I wouldn’t call it good. Works well enough for the job it’s suppose to do. But for the uninitiated, especially if you don’t know what a Dark Souls is. It can be a challenge. Combat is effectively color coated spell attacks, dogging and parrying. Combo each and you have a fun system. Problem is, when every game was just mash buttons to win and you have many many non-gamers struggle to get past the tutorial. Myself included (even with my gamer cred). I eventually learned, but the reward wasn’t satisfying. More enemies all looking similar with very little in the ways of weaknesses. By the second trial I just turned the difficulty down to easy and left it there for the rest of the game. Honestly it’s probably the most fun when you set it to story only mode.

Since where the game wants you to be in the most is in the exportation of the open world… barf. Open World in video games is a fun idea. But for a story driven game like this… I just gets in the way. Don’t get me wrong it’s neat, but not a game where you are a student at school… which is where you are suppose to spend your time. Not in each and every hamlet around the castle and beyond.

And your reward for exploration… rare items and gear. I get it, but this isn’t what I was hoping for in a Harry Potter game. I want a linear story, and that’s here, but where I spend time at the school and maybe sneak out from time to time. Not all the time. Actually I don’t think I’ve been to classes since the beginning of the year.

Honestly where Hogwarts Legacy could’ve improved was if it looked in the past, and borrow from it’s contemporaries.

I am imagining a RPG style game, like the GBC harry potter games, with items purchased from a shop and all that. But with the Persona social aspects. Keep combat the way it is for those who like it, but toning down the difficulty doesn’t need to ruin the parts of the experience. I think it would work and I’d probably buy it, and if no one makes it, I would… when I have time to make games again.

In hind sight though, despite there being potential to be a better game. What is here isn’t bad. In contrast with previous games, this is the best Harry Potter game I’ve played. There’s lots to do and to see. And while I am not a fan of the combat, I wont say that it’s bad. Overall I do hope Avalanche games has another opportunity to make a new game, and WB Games lets them spread their wings.

Funnily enough, the combat was one of my favorite parts of the game. It was super satisfying and worked really well. Getting into gnarly battles and nailing the combos was so good.

    Different strokes, i guess.

I agree. You hit all of the points that I felt the game fell short.

The castle was beautiful, but we didn’t spend rough time in it. Much of the open world felt like filler and it just wasn’t as enjoyable to be in.

The combat felt out of place in this game. Having a student running around killing people should not have been as normalized as it was. I think a focus on more non combat magic would have worked better. Some combat would be OK, but it should have been far rarer.

Yeah, just like OP, i just wanted to go to school, explore the castle, and skip class once on a while

Instead, a lot of the game is just running around murdering goblins. And my character is a total psycho… Just gleefully wiping people out with UNFORGIVABLE CURSES, WTF… using a curse is enough to land you in azkaban. Yet my character is just openly firing these curses off with impunity and the game seemingly doesnt give you any feedback that this is wrong, nor any deterrents. (Maybe there are some consequences later?? I put the game down for a while because the constant combat was too much for me)

Also, kidnapping animals, and putting them in your zoo so that you can harvest magical materials from them. How is that any better than the poachers???

Kids are going to have a warped sense of morality after playing this game

My character was straight up an actual poacher cause the best way to make money is selling creatures to that lady in Hogsmeade.

I vote for the next game, black is sacked because of this. Or we can sacrifice him to the centaurs for it.

        Oh he’s 100% the villain in 2 or 3 (if it’s a trilogy, which I think I heard?). Edit: I mean Black

I’d hope they building quidditch into the sequel.

I’m currently still playing it - just because I got it on PSN. I’m not at all into the Harry Potter lore, ok one boring weekend I watched the films and they are OK - but it’s not my kind of topic at all.

So as a non potter fan: The game is absolutely beautiful, combat is ok I agree but all those side quests are not creative, they are frequently boring - as in many meh open worlds. (I enjoy open world, Witcher 3, Horizon - much better)

I think Legacy had better followed a system like the modern God of War, where the story drives what you can access.

Because it’s so beautiful I explored the full map as soon I had a broom, so no there’s no sense of wonder having the story play in a new part of the map.

Having played far cry, I started taking out camps just for fun early - as soon you can get invisible you can just cheese a lot of the enemies. All that combat feels disconnected from the story, they could have just left it out.

Learning new spells in class is like cool on one hanf and feels like one of my nightmares where I’m back in school on the other. The tasks you need to complete for each, come one collect a potion buy some stuff - didn’t they have better ideas.

Probably a lot could have been made out of the school situation with all the shenanigans between pupils, but the game is so fucking politically correct they won’t even play pranks on each other.

We’re the teacher’s pet. Yaaawn. What about being on a mission while everyone sees you as a no good troublemaker?

Still overall a really OK game, but not great.

I really enjoyed the game, the combat and the world. I only found the main story to be the most lacking, any other quest and aspect I found super enjoyable.

I’d like to ask you a favour, please 🥺. Can you please avoid talking about the TERF game? I don’t like it when people are reminded about it, because they might give money to the TERF. Can you be extra nice and pretend the game doesn’t exist?

Let’s not forget that a literal Nazi worked on the game in addition to JK being a giant piece of shit.

I’m trans and I see where you’re coming from. I was boycotting the game ahead of launch because I didn’t want to support J.K. Rowling, who has based her career off of making our lives harder.

But…it’s been two years. We lost the battle. The boycott led to the Streisand effect and the game sold insanely well. Trans people got a ton of negative press converage. We were all made out to be intolerant and cruel because one trans person said something that made the GirlfriendReviews lady cry. It seemed like after that, GamerGate 2 went into effect and so many games with diversity are getting preemptively reviewbombed, like Dragon Age: The Veilguard, leading to layoffs and shuttered development teams, while games like Black Myth Wukong with a known sexist director are insanely popular.

Hogwarts Legacy seems like such a small issue now. Now it’s 2025 and we’re quickly losing all our rights in an ongoing Constitutional crisis. These days, while I’d prefer if cis people buy the game used and add disclaimers to the posts they make about it, I’m too exhausted to care about the Wizard game and who chooses to play it.

Hey sis, I feel where you are coming from and I truly understand, there are a lot of scary things happening in the world and what others do with their time isn’t something you should ever worry about.

I have a lot of emotions when I see people talk about HP, primarily dissapointment, my guess is that all trans folk do. But it wasn’t a fight we lost, because it wasn’t a fight, but slow incremental progress. If something simple as media choices are a stumbling block for “allies”, then they are just fairweather friends. Naturally people react defensively to criticism, such as GirlfriendReviews, but that doesn’t make make giving money to those that persecute us any less valid critique.

You’re exhausted, so am I, we all are. Transphobia is rampant, yet it’s better than ten years ago, better than 30 and better than a 100. The progress is slow, but talking about the ways our community is harmed is the way to make the next 100 years better.

Just say you dont give a fuck about trans people being attacked daily on every god damn right wing news station, being too scare to use public bathroom, and being threatened on their right to exist. JKR is OBSESSED by attacking trans identity. To the point where every actors of the movies have distance themselves from her. There’s ton of great games to play out there, when you pick that one you say, I really dont care about trans people. So just say you don’t care, and I’ll have a little more respect for you than if you call people pretentious for pointing out jkr is transphobe.

Fun fact! She’s rebooting the series as a TV show so she can put new lead actors on the branding, because Daniel, Rupert, and Emma are woke.

I want to dismember her uwu
