I genuinely didn’t even notice the first time I downloaded and viewed a .webp. Firefox and Gwenview (the KDE image viewer) handled it just fine. So does GIMP if I want to edit one.
What common software are people trying to use that doesn’t support it?
I have no idea. I had a funny issue where .webps had a different default program, but that was the only time I’ve had to think about an image extension (I use Linux too (Mint btw)).
The only thing I’ve encountered is older versions of Wordpress. It didn’t support webp until 2021 or so

Windows Photo Viewer’s code bade predate the damn format. The new Photos app supports it tho
oops that’s what i meant there was a good chunk of time where w10 photos app would refuse to open webp
You need to download the WebP extension for windows from the Microsoft Store
Or just use linux™
The exact same thing will happen with .jxl
I’m so fucking sad about .jxl, it’s a better and more open format than webp, but Google refused to support it in Chrome due to corporate interests in webp, so it’s basically dead. Only Firefox supports it.
