There are currently six trans people incarcerated in Quebec provincial prisons. Six. That’s 0.1 percent of the incarcerated population. There’s no data indicating how many of those people have or haven’t had bottom surgery, mind you. Regardless, it’s clear that we’re talking about a tiny fraction of people. This is a tactic from the anti-trans playbook that we’ve seen used over and over: taking an issue that affects a minuscule segment of the population, blowing it out of proportion and using it to roll back human rights protections.

Trust a politician to do dumb shit like this. Someone is gonna get killed and Bonnardel will shed crocodile tears over it.

If anyone can say they are a women and get moved to a women’s prison then who wouldn’t, I know I absolutely would, what percentage of men want to be locked up with men rather than women?

You’re the top of the pecking order in a women’s prison, you get to see things you don’t in a men’s prison, and theres perhaps opportunity for some action.

I mean you read it right there though, they’ve already dealt with it, there’s six. Sort of makes it seem like this legislation is about a political statement rather than trying to address a real problem, no?

Well it’s six right now, you think inmates are good stewards of the honor system?

Was I somehow banned for saying this? That’s a pretty wild bar for being labeled a transphobe. I’ve got nothing against trans people, I have something against abusers of the system.

I mean, maybe someone could abuse it but I would rather that then deny someone the right to own their identity.

I hope I didn’t come off as trying to label you as anything, merely engaging in thoughtful discussion.

Then may as well just remove segregated prisons, because it makes zero sense to trust prisoners to not game an easily gamed system. You’re insanely naive if you think that they won’t.

There are a lot of things wrong with prison, starting with throwing people who don’t behave into a cage and treating them like animals and ending with taking people who clearly weren’t socialized properly and doing nothing to socialize them. And frankly, learning how to deal with the opposite sex appropriately is a key part of socialization. If prisoner rehabilitation was taken seriously, at least partially desegregated prisons would make a lot of sense.
