India is taking urgent steps to halt the transmission of a rare but deadly virus that spreads from bats to humans.
The Nipah outbreak is the fourth to hit Kerala in five years — the most recent one was in 2021. Although such outbreaks usually affect a relatively small geographical area, they can be deadly, and some scientists worry that increased spread among people could lead to the virus becoming more contagious. Nipah virus has a fatality rate between 40% and 75% depending on the strain
Terrible for the people involved. Luckily for the world, it seems too deadly to spread. Covid killed more because it didn’t kill the carriers quickly.
Definitely far too deadly to spread far. For reference, Covids fatality rate is just over 1%.
I totally agree with you. Poor people.

Fruit bat chews on some fruit in a tree. Fruit picker handles fruit, before realising its no good. Tosses it, but has got some juice on their hands now. Rubs their eyes or nose or licks their fingers, or maybe has a cut on their hands?
Guano is also a potential infection source
Allllllrighty then!
