What happens to the accounts that signed up on that server? For instance, if lemmy.world drops what happens to all it’s users?
needs
- migration tool
- self-backup tool
- admin backup validation and public backup verification
- ?
++ federation replication integrity tools, back-fill tools
Example from yesterday, comparing different instances on which comments actually made it to peer instances:
https://lemmy.ml/post/1239920 has 19 comments (community home)
https://lemmy.pro/post/1354 has 1 comment
https://sh.itjust.works/post/74015 has 9 comments
https://lemmy.world/post/103943 has 9 comments
https://programming.dev/post/29631 has 13 comments
https://beehaw.org/post/536574 has 7 commentsPretty much this.
Mastodon had similar issues for a long while, but as it’s more mature than lemmy, export features now exist. Posts from a dead instance will exist on federated instances, but I think the biggest issue would be losing on what communities you subscribe to.
Unknown - Lemmy is a bit less “mature” than some of the other Fediverse platforms like Mastodon where you can at least export your data. All we have is “delete my account” for example.
If the instance goes away, that’s a good question. Certainly federated instances stop receiving anything from it. Will instances that have users who have subscribed to its communities still see cached posts etc? Probably. Unless there’s a “Im going away, purge my stuff from you” msg in the AP that I dunno of (haven’t finished reading it), a subscribing instance might just think “well, its unavailable at the moment Ill try later.”
Death
It was all written down when you signed up “if server dies, User dies with that server”
I expect we’ll see import/export like other fediverse tools have in short time. BUT… unlike reddit/twitter/fb - if your server dies, you hop on another and you’re still part of the “fediverse”
I’d also like to see “channel/magazine” relays here like we have on mastodon so servers can relay and fill the gaps in core channels nicely.
And there seems to be no migration option for now
We perish
It all dies. Choose wisely grasshopper.
We need a mirroring function where I can silly to another server to mirror my user account where I can move to automatically without any issues when required.
Same for communities. If a server hosting a community goes down, a mirror on another server can take over after some mod activates it.
They go too since that’s where the account was hosted, but their posts on other Lemmies would probably persist
