Needs no introduction in this sub. I’m getting this out just before hitting play.

hollow knight is indicative of a change in the genre that started with soulslikes: more focus on combat, and harder combat. it’s a shame imo.

Yea, they are great games, that cannot be denied, but I miss vanias that don’t require high skill ceilings. I miss being able to just casually enjoy the Metroidvania experience.

I’m a 30+ year old dude with nerve damaged hands. I can’t keep up with these games explicitly designed for try-hards.

Games that fit the mold do exist but they are rare; even rarer considering my situation where I don’t have access to my PC.

I really liked that Nine Sols had an difficulty slider. It was much harder for me than Hollow Knight, but I could adjust the slider instead of banging my head against the wall. I sometimes can enjoy the satisfaction of completing something tough, but I have limited time to play games and it’s getting trickier with a young child.

Oh cool, didn’t know it had a slider. Might try it cause it does look cool.

Yea, I get the time crunch. I don’t personally have it anymore cause I’ve been unemployed for what feels like forever and no children but, like I said, I got nerve issues. I can sometimes do tough challenges but I gotta be able to adjust to the capabilities of my hands at the time otherwise it’s physically impossible even if I bash my head against the wall.

Essentially, we both want to be able to play these wonderful games and enjoy them but as we want, at our level of satisfaction and challenge that we are capable of during our limited available time, which should just be basic accessibility features at this point. I get wanting to prove one’s skill and gaming prowess, but other people also just want to be able to play at all. No one’s stopping anyone from playing on the hardest difficulties with the hardest sliders if you want those bragging rights.

The difficulty of Hollow Knight is definitely part of what has made me stay away from it. Also some of those aforementioned Soulslike influences like annoying corpse runs and excessive runbacks.

      Plus I suck at platforming.

i stuck to it for thirty hours i think, but the game just starts to slow down as the combat gets harder and by then i was no longer having fun.

Yeah it’s a shame because I can tell it has a lot of good qualities, the art is gorgeous and the lore seems interesting, soundtrack is good too. I just know I would not have any fun with it.
