All true and good stuff well-written and structured too. The best insight is about the difference between the old small web and the new small web: in the old web, you curated information because the network was sparse and hard to explore. In the new small web, the situation is the opposite, but ironically the solution is largely the same. You curate information because the network is dense, and although the network is easy to explore, it’s hard to find something of value. I wonder what might change about the way small sites curate content in light of this? Is there any way modern small web sites could do this better for the current situation?

One thing I can think of is that maybe, in addition to the standard sections I see on lots of personal web revival sites, sections like “about me”, “you”, “me”, “webrings”, “resources” etc…maybe it would be nice to see a more common appearance of a sort of “Museum”, “Archive”, “Collection”, or something. This would probably go under the You section for a lot of sites. But something where you just host or link to resources for all sorts of things. Not just for building sites or other sites you like. For instance, maybe you know some obscure site that has a great page for conjugating Spanish verbs. You could put that in your Museum. It’s not quite the same as being affies, you don’t need to have an 88x31 for them, you’re not even necessarily saying you love the whole site or anything. It’s just a place for helping other people find ANY kind of helpful, useful stuff. Of course I’ve seen many sites already doing this sort of thing, but it would be cool to see it become a more typical page.

Back in the 2000s that page was simply called “Links”. Just a collection of links to whichever cool homepages you wanted to share with people.

Oh yeah, duh, good point! Nowadays I’m used to seeing that more as links just to other personal sites. (Nothing wrong with that either!)
