I have no doubt that Maduro is actually a criminal.

He just had no buisness being or New York, or being tried in any American court

I don’t know or care if he’s a criminal. If he violated international law he should have been brought in to an international court at the ICC’s request by an international coalition of forces, and if he violated Venezuelan law he should be arrested, tried, and sentenced in Venezuela by Venezuelans. Unless he violated USAmerican law, in USAmerica without immunity, and was arrested in the US he shouldn’t be in US courts.

We are not the sovereigns of the whole planet. Other countries are other countries and we need to act like it.

Wouldn’t that require consent from Maduro? AFAIK the ICC doesn’t really catch people from countries that refuse them.

and if he violated Venezuelan law he should be arrested, tried, and sentenced in Venezuela by Venezuelans

Kinda need a coup d’etat for that first if he runs the country

        Wholly agreed.

But seriously, you pretty much can’t actually charge a dictator while they’re still in power. Kidnapping them like Trump did is pretty much the only way, but that doesn’t mean it’s a legitimate way.

I have no doubt that Maduro is actually a criminal.

Guy was illegally operating a Latin American democracy in defiance of decades of US coup attempts. He should be arrested, convicted, shot, buried, exhumed, convicted a second time, and launched into the sun. How fucking dare he.

I’m all fuck the US and the US’s imperialism in Venezuela (and in general) but let’s not whitewash Maduro either.

Calling the system under Maduro a “democracy” is a massive stretch.

          let’s not whitewash Maduro either

“S/He was no angel” is the same language conservative media uses to smear victims of police shootings, ICE arrests of migrant people, and targets of US/Israeli assassination.

Getting tired of hearing the nightmarish actions of a fascist state justified by rattling off reasons you think the victims of this violence deserved it.

Calling the system under Maduro a “democracy” is a massive stretch.

How many foreign backed coup attempts does the Venezuelan government need to thwart before we question the foreign-sponsored narrative that the current government is popular and the people failing to replace them through armed insurrection are not?

The number of times I have said this on Threadiverse… Some people here seem to always believe theres a good guy and a bad guy. The world isn’t usually like that. Very few good guys in power.

And dipshits can just say shit and fall back on this line when the clear self serving interest behind the completely baseless allegation is examined

good thing you didn’t elaborate an iota otherwise someone could accuse you of being racist

Ethical arguments aside, this operation costed at least several hundred million.

It cost 80 people and counting their lives. It cost homes and it destroyed the livelihood of dozens of Venezuelan fishermen. It will cost the country lifetimes devoted to the miserable task of once again bulking up the military and training people in the art of killing, in hopes of improving civil defense.

Fiscally this is a terrible use of money.

It was a rape. A brutal and callous use of force that will haunt the country for a generation to come.

Even if it didn’t cost a dime, it would have been a horror to perpetrate on anyone, much less an entire nation of people.

What we did was Venezuela’s 9/11.
