You’ll note from the demeanor of those 1870s French sharpshooters, they did not win their war with Germany.
So important to remember that Napoleon III was a despot who subverted his republic, and replaced competent people with blind loyalists. The result was a mismatched war, and soldiers like those sharpshooters put in impossible situations.
You think that is bad? Imagine being under the rule of Prussians.
