The acting is weaker than Marty Supreme, the writing is significantly worse than Bugonia, the effects are worse than Sinners, and the music is wholly unremarkable. I don’t think you should win best picture by doing a bunch of things well, you should do something to stand out from the rest of the field

Then what do you suppose the point of all those having their own award category is?

Best Picture is for Best Picture. It might be best in more than one category or none of them and nonetheless be the best work in its entirety.

In an ideal system, anyways, but this discussion hardly matters when the title is for sale.

Personally I think a movie good enough to win best picture should be capable of picking up an award in another major category. I think it’s also possible for a movie to win one of those other awards so hard it also wins best picture

I just don’t think there are many movies that deserve best picture but don’t deserve a win in another category

As a Del Toro fan, I think his adaptation of Frankenstein is good. Not accurate to the book but still a good movie and very well made.

I don’t think it should win awards over multiple movies that released last year.

I think it’s a great adaptation of Frankenstein for modern sensibilities, including spelling out for the dummies that Frankenstein is a surname and they’re thus both Frankensteins, but it lost a lot of things in the process.

The other problem is one of the modern sensibilities is Del Toro’s ever more obvious monster fucker fetish. Specifically I think what he actually likes are the women that are monster fuckers?

I would definitely put it in my top 20 from last year. Maybe top ten but like #9 or #10 but it’s not like I’m actually going to mar a list. There’s effort involved in that and I’m against effort.
