I’m very curious about the reasoning different people use when deciding to downvote a post or comment. Often, when something gets “heavily” downvoted, the OP will ask some variation of “why the downvotes?”. This is sometimes answered with sincere criticism, but sometimes is received even more poorly than the original offending post.
Do you downvote people who ask “why the downvotes?”? What informs the decision?

There is no great meaning to a down vote. They didnt like what was posted.
Even if people only downvote for small reasons I still want to know what they are. Are they the same as mine? Are they the opposite of mine? do they consider factors I’d never considered, or would never consider? Do they make sense to me even if I disagree, or are they utterly incomprehensible? So many things I want to know about how people make this tiny decision.
It’s not always negative, goth Lemmings downvote comments they like.
That’s so cool, I have never heard of such a thing. is it a written rule for the comm(s) or is it more of an unofficial custom?
Apologies, I was ripping off Paul F Tompkins’ standup from before he got sober.
oh lol.
