In my observation of religious leadership, there’s little correlation between how much the leader loves the god vs their peers in the same religion. In fact, it seems to be the opposite. Religious leaders are rank pragmatists that understand that furthering the religion is a numbers game for people and immense amounts of money are needed with the additional requirement of very little oversight. Knowledge of law, law enforcement, local and national politics are also critical to religious leaders. None of those very Earthly matters requires faith, and in fact the true zealots of the faith would make a mess of it assuming god will intervene on the church’s behalf.
