[But] to make sure it doesn’t become stale and people know exactly where it’s going, [that it] doesn’t just follow the original word for word, we add in extra elements which add that little bit of doubt. Getting the right balance of that is so key. Ultimately, we’re not trying to change the Final Fantasy 7 story into something really different. The overall balance wouldn’t really allow for that anyway.”

Was Advent Children ever not canon?
I think there’s been some doubt from different groups of people on whether AC would be canon in the new trilogy, given the way Remake ended.
I don’t think it was in doubt with the OG. Not that I’ve seen anyway.

It feels like this massively debunks the theory it’s a sequel? Unless it’s just word play tricking me, but if it’s leading up to AC as a sequel, it can’t be a sequel
I understand where you’re coming from but I suppose it depends on whether sequel angle is embedded in the alternate universe theory or not. A sequel taking place directly after the OG? Seems a bit silly to me, so yep, this would debunk it. But if its an alternative universe, then story continuation is possible without removing either OG or Re:Trilogy as canon, they can both exist in tandem. It’s difficult to say for certainty without playing Rebirth, but even then, we might not get answers until the third game.
