I see no flaw in the logic of the article. I would like links to verify the stated information (got a trust issue on the internet).
But i want to raise attention to the fact that this is not limited to discord. Everytime some sort of server is involved and the system is not based on peer to peer, someone got to provide and pay some sort of computational power. Someone pays for your matrix server, your lemmy instance,… if those services grow in popularity we got to talk about the costs and what people that pay expect.
