xAI, Elon Musk’s newly formed AI company, has revealed itself with a new website detailing its mission and team at https://x.ai/. Musk tweeted the company’s intent is to “understand reality” without any other details or explanation.

“The goal of xAI is to understand the true nature of the universe,” according to the website. The team is headed up by Elon Musk and includes team members that have worked at other big names in AI, including OpenAI, Google Research, Microsoft Research, and DeepMind (which was recently folded into Google).

It’s hilarious to me that Elon insisted on having a headshot and being mentioned first in the team description. Everyone knows he isn’t doing anything of value, but he has to appear as if he’s writing the code himself because his tiny ego can’t tolerate “just” being the money guy.

Haven’t you heard? He personally designed rockets, satellites, and electric car batteries and he also mined his own emeralds.

I heard he also hand builds every Tesla. Crazy he has time to do that while meticulously crafting every starlink satellite and raptor engine from scratch!

Wait, I thought Musk wanted all AI development to stop for a while until regulations were put in place?

Oh boy, can’t wait for the new racist, antisemitic, transphobic, far right fascist AI to emerge from this.

He used to be a donor and a board member

In 2018, Musk resigned his board seat, citing “a potential future conflict [of interest]” with his role as CEO of Tesla due to Tesla’s AI development for self-driving cars. Sam Altman claims that Musk believed OpenAI had fallen behind other players like Google and Musk proposed instead to take over OpenAI himself, which the board rejected. Musk subsequently left OpenAI but claimed to remain a donor, yet made no donations after his departure.

Given the fuss he made about OpenAI being closed source (a case of broken clocks), it will be interesting to see if this is open source (doubt)
